Yep. I did it again just now, but this time on Nestopia since I don't have an NES anymore.

Achievements are an artificial and cheap way to add more ”content”, replayability and length to a game. There are hardly any achievements that are actually achievements, the game just awards players for playing the game like some kindergartner ”kill 5 enemies” ”complete your first quest” and all that stuff. Majority of other achievements are useless collecting and that sort of stuff. Who cares about running around in Alan Wake or LA Noire collecting some useless items? Achievements are ok if the actually mean something, like the gnome in Episode 2 or pre nerf/updated gear hard mode PvE kills in WoW, getting gladiator title etc. I really hate this modern mentality that players need to be rewarded by the game for doing stuff they are supposed to do or for taking the time to find secret quests, hidden areas, do side missions etc - they are supposed to be the reward that you get for exploring the game world, not the achievement points/gamer score/trophies/what ever that you get from completing them.

It's a silly thing to worry about. Why play the same game again searching every nook and cranny or worse, play the game with some sort of walkthrough guide, when you can just move on the next game once you've completed the portion of the game that actually matters - the storyline.

Oh I know :) - I was using that more as a way to point out how little progress I tend to make in the games I play. I figure just by completing most games you probably hit maybe 65% - 75% of the trophies/achievements perhaps?

But yeah.. I agree with you I think. I do like some games achievements not for the points they give me, but because they can encourage me to try and play the game in a different way or mess around with some part of the game I might not have given much thought to otherwise.

It can be even more satisfying to play a game with a well-made set of achievements, or completely not affect the fun at all if they are boring or too impossible to get.

Yeah, achievements like that are great. Like the gnome in Half Life 2 Episode 2 that I already mentioned. Something that makes you rethink the way you play, look for different routes etc, especially if there is some puzzle like pondering like in Portal games involved (how the hell I'm gonna get past THAT?!). For some reason game developers these days think that EVERY game has to have achievements. In many cases I've just wanted to play a game through once and after the last boss was dead, I already had 65-80% of all available achievements. If you cant think of innovative and fun achievements, dont have any at all. It is a great feeling when you actually do something that you previously thought to be impossible on your first playthrough. Having to think out side the box and using the game's mechanics to your own advantage is a great thing.

I was actually an ”achievement whore” in WoW  Nothing like putting thousands of hours of your life into useless achievements just so your e-peen gets bigger...

I got one -- check out last month's Together Retro on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. I have *never* played a Tony Hawk game but in the course of 30 days I went from start to finish, getting all 3 competition gold medals and completed nearly every single goal and saw the special videos as well as the credits roll. My history was chronicled in that TR thread.

I'm pretty proud of getting 100% achievements for The Binding of Isaac, mainly for the no-hit ones in the 3rd and 4th levels.
