In fairness to Square, this was going to be a product for money.

correct. It actually got press and everything. Was announced in a pretty shady way to look like a legit licensed remake for monies.

Mystic Quest is legitimately good. I don't have many issues with it.

Mystic Quest's crime really was "it's not Final Fantasy II". Or IV, whatever. There's nothing inherently wrong with it other than the crushing expectations that came with the Final Fantasy name at the time.

I enjoyed Mystic Quest more than Final Fantasy V, that's for sure.
