I've never downloaded DLC and can't make heads or tails of any of this.

They are the "featured" levels this week and so players get a few more drops by playing them (one time). for this, OUTRAGE!
Just leave it Dave, it seems some of the people who are jumping in have not actually played the game and have no idea what the Weekly/Nightfall is. However see a bullshit over the top headline and jump in.

Full list of "Content" that the users will be locked out of this week includes (You get these items one time):

- 9 Strange Coins (the currency to buy from the weekend dealer, acquirable elsewhere)

- Vanguard Reputation (XP used to buy higher gear from the Vanguard Dealer, acquirable from many sources, including the Vanguard Strikes playlist, available at anytime.)

- Vanguard Marks (The currency of the Vanguard Dealer, acquirable from many sources, including the Vanguard Strikes playlist, available at anytime.)

- Ascendant Material (Used to level up higher end items, I have more of these than I need as does anyone who has done the raid)

- Chance of a Legendary/Exotic gear drop (Like many missions, including the Vanguard Strikes playlist, available at anytime.)

I don't think anything else is locked out, no levels, game modes, etc. All purely "consumables" within the game, that you can get from a wide ranges of places.

If you wish to play any of the strikes, you can select them. If you wish to play them at a higher level for Vanguard Marks or Vanguard Reputation you can do so using the Vanguard Strikes playlist.

I really don't see the problem with this. If I was playing a MMO modeled game, and the raid of the week or the daily heroic wasn't part of what content I had installed, I doubt I'd have much reason to be upset, especially if the outcome simply was gear.

However, we have once again crossed a threshold where the only way we can attempt to convey our points is with the senselessness of making a comparison to rape and sexual assault. Yep, gaming as a leisurely activity that we willingly engage in, is compared to an act fueled by control, power-based violence and lack of consent.

Tanooki, your polarizing and harmful posts are not acceptable. This forum is usually pretty accepting of everyone. Even those that rock the boat from time to time can usually find a place here. We've usually been patient about your incredibly biased point of views, even though you are convinced of your own opinions as if they were fact.

Not once did you apologize for your comment. That would have been the appropriate thing to do. Instead you try and legitimize your previous comments by saying it's a rape of your wallet, as if that absolves your previous faux pas.

And no, it's not anyone being oversensitive, politically correct, or anything otherwise. Your words matter.

I just view them like expansion packs, like StarCraft: Brood War, Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency and Total Annihilation: Battle Tactics, WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell, Unreal: Return to Na Pali, Diablo: Hellfire, and so on.

I can't do this when half the DLC out there is costumes or 1-2 hour levels.

Expansion packs man, were like full on sequels back in the day.

That's a tough argument to make though when the content in question was developed and probably completed within the original development cycle and costs you about a quarter of what the game cost in the first place.

And I'm not saying Destiny is the only culprit of this practice. But this way of delivering "new" content feels very different from a full fledged expansion pack coming out a year later and offering the amount of new content that something like Brood War or Frozen Throne offers.

So you have never, ever, in your entire life, made a stupid rape joke without the intent to offend anyone? If we were playing Mario Bros and I was like "aw yeah, fuck you bowser, good luck sitting down tomorrow!", you would be heinously offended and give me a speech about comparing super mario to sexual assault?

Instead of full expansion packs which waited for a physical release, DLC is smaller chunks that when added up, typically equal an expansion pack.

Exceptions to this rule are expacks that are more like full on sequels such as Throne of Bhaal for BG2.

I'm guilty of making some off color jokes sometimes. I'm still working on breaking myself of calling dumb things "retarded", which was a word thrown around a lot when I was a kid. I've got it mostly under control, but one slips out every now and then if I'm frustrated about something.

Personally I think the addition of "good luck sitting down tomorrow" does push that toward distastefulness to me. I might not lecture someone for saying that, but If they tend to make jokes like that, I probably wouldn't want to be around them at the very least. Likewise I don't play games with people who trash talk because it gets annoying, especially if they have to resort to offensive insults.

The whole point is that rape shouldn't be a joke. It might be easy for some to blow it off if it hasn't happened to them, but for someone (or any age or sex) that it had happened to it's going to be uncomfortable to hear as a joke. Obviously different things have different cooling off periods than others, but a less severe example would be making jokes involving death around someone who had just lost a friend or family member and hadn't gotten over it yet.

+1 to Hobie, and yes, I've used rape jokes previously in my youth (16-19) in the midst of having a bout during a game or something else. In the last 9 years though, once I was called out on it and asked that out of the thousands of ways to convey my point, that I could use any one of those words to actually say what I meant. It's out of my vernacular now.

And for what it's worth, intent doesn't matter.

So yes, if you said, you totally raped me, and if you had no ill intent, I'd simply say, you're a smart guy, and I think you can articulate that point a little bit better than what you just did, and that you can do better. I'd even say it in a non condescending tone, depending on my relationship with you.

Edit: I do appreciate you making the attempt at looking to call me a hypocrite, though. Too bad I've never said I was perfect. :o
