They weren't persecuted by Americans. I think they should use a sensible name like Ack mentioned. The term 'redskin' is borderline offensive. It's like the word 'nigga'. I know several African American kids, who when I try to have a conversation, use the word literally in every sentence and take no offence. This word is also used in almost every single hip-hop song. Then on the other hand there are many African American kids who absolute despise the word. Why not just rename then something like the Washington Sinixt? It's still Native American related and not offensive. In the end it's up to the NFL and what they think.MrPopo wrote:I just wonder why there isn't an uproar about Notre Dame perpetuating the stereotype that all Irish people are leprechauns who punch each other out.
Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?

Most of my North Carolinian friends grew up with the Braves as their team and when I asked them the same question they said "Might not be recognized as the official mascot, but chief Noc'a is usually at every game". These guys go to Brave's games every year.Ack wrote: Technically not since 1986.
I asked the same group of friends if the stadium still sells the foam tomahawks, and the answer I got from everyone was "Don't know. Seems like everyone already owns one". Obviously, the chant will never go away.
And Ack, speaking of Colleges who Honor Native Americans who don't seem to get a chip on their shoulder about it would be my favorite college hockey team, the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. I own one of their hockey sweaters.
Hey...I own a Notre Dame hockey sweater as well.MrPopo wrote:I just wonder why there isn't an uproar about Notre Dame perpetuating the stereotype that all Irish people are leprechauns who punch each other out.
And why those Canucks aren't in an uproar is cray cray.

I take it you have never seen a "No Irish Need Apply" sign?oxymoron wrote:They weren't persecuted by Americans.

Nope. Just saw one for the first time. It's persecution, just on a smaller level.Stark wrote:I take it you have never seen a "No Irish Need Apply" sign?oxymoron wrote:They weren't persecuted by Americans.

As someone who has owned a foam tomahawk, damn straight. Like I said, "technically." I'm pretty sure his teepee isn't currently there.Luke wrote:Most of my North Carolinian friends grew up with the Braves as their team and when I asked them the same question they said "Might not be recognized as the official mascot, but chief Noc'a is usually at every game". Didn't the Fighting Sioux just lose the chance to use that name, despite the local Sioux supporting it? I had heard they did.
Smaller level? Whole political parties were developed to eliminate the Irish influence. Hell, a large part of New England politics in the 1800s was about keeping the Irish down.oxymoron wrote:Nope. Ack,
Not that I'm aware of. The University is still selling Fighting Sioux merch.
Moron,
You live up to your name. No, you don't use the n word in front of black "friends", and...I'll just stop there.

The Irish are too busy trying to get rid of Corey the Leprechaun off of Lucky Charms boxes. That's phase 1.dsheinem wrote:I assume their fans are too drunk to care.MrPopo wrote:I just wonder why there isn't an uproar about Notre Dame perpetuating the stereotype that all Irish people are leprechauns who punch each other out.

Compared to the Natives who had most of their land stolen from them, were beat and killed, lied to and forced onto reservations, I think it's safe to say they had it a just a little bit harder. There are both horrific incidents. I guess the Natives are more offended because they're still feeling the effects.Ack wrote:Smaller level? I don't use the word, they do. Please read it correctly. What do you mean 'friends'?Luke wrote:Ack,

You could say the same thing about Native Americans and The Redskins
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_an ... _AmericansProblems continue among contemporary Indians with 12% of the deaths among American Indians and Alaska Natives being alcohol-related.
According to these statistics about 2.6% (if you're using the highest number, year 2008) of all deaths in Ireland are caused by alcohol (40826 total deaths). Though the alcohol rates and mortality rate are from different years (2008 alcohol deaths, 2011 population estimate, 2012 mortality rate estimate)
