 I find it funny since every military game I've played seems so linear.

Hell in spec ops I was annoyed by this at the start where you are going down what used to be a highway instead of just walking on the sides in the open instead of being stuck in a bottle neck situation.

Escape From Alcatraz

You've been sent to the toughest prison in the country for a crime you didn't commit, your wife's murder. Your first task is to escape and get to shore. You can recreate the actual famous escape, or you can find your own way out. The choice is yours.

Once you've accomplished that feat, your job becomes twofold: Find your wife's actual killer and the evidence needed to convict and avoid the police long enough to clear your name. If you are spotted by the police at any point, it's an immediate game over.

A few random concepts for game adaptations:

* Stealth-action game based on Phantom of the Paradise, which picks up right after Winslow arrives at The Paradise and dons the persona of The Phantom. The game would be much like other stealth games, particularly Batman: Arkham Asylum, where you'd have to take out the guards and miscellaneous Paradise employees, while also engaging in sabotage (like putting explosives into the back of a prop surf wagon (is that the word I'm looking for?), or hurling a blue neon lightning bolt at Beef), though giving you more options and giving the game more replay value.

* Collection of Glee-inspired arcade-style games, like a Galaga-esque shmup where you're on your way to the choir room and dodging slushie attacks from pretty much everyone in the hallway.

* REPO!-based games. One puts you in the role of the Repo Man, using stealth and surgical skill to get back Geneco's property. Basically it'd be a mashup of Manhunt, Splinter Cell and Trauma Center. And a Graverobber game, which mashes up Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia (for the parkour-style shizz), and a business sim.

* Edward Lee's City Infernal, as an open-ended GTA-like action-RPG set in the Mephistopolis, the City of Hell. But since you'd be playing as Cassie Heydon from the books, you'd be playing as an Etheress, which in turn would grant you some badass powers, a la Fear, Fracture, Prototype, et al.

* A Harry Potter based game where you experience life as a Hogwarts student, from getting the letter to the tail end of your 7th year. Possible room of post-Hogwarts life.

* Old-school adventure games (SCUMM-based and Sierra's AGI/SCI-based games come to mind) based on Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living.

* Cecil B Demented as an open-world action game.

I would play this as long as the soundtrack was the underwater music from DKC looped over and over.

I like it, but how about we just focus on the escape portion and keep the ending nebulous at best?

I had a dream back in like 2000 about such a game after a few months of marathon sessions of DDR. One day I vow to make the game I dreamed about

A killer soundtrack would indeed be required, full of the best underwater music. Ecco: The Song of Time would be extensively tapped. It'd be like the un-DDR. instead of frantic dancing, it's all about smoothness and motion and timing. kinda like Yoga, except to bitchin electro-synth orchestra.

Gossip Queen

This is a teen drama game. You need to destroy your enemies with gossip and lies to scratch and claw your way to the top of the popularity hierarchy.

You will need to manage your stats so that you have enough credibility and sway that people will actually believe the shit you talk and somehow still trust your backstabbing ass. Make your lies too far fetched, tell inconsistent stories, or piss off the wrong clique and the whole school might turn against you, but mix the right amount of truth and lies and you can vy for position at the top of the cheerleader pyramid. You'll have to sleuthe for some real info and make sure there are no alibies, then add the right amount of embarassing embellishment and you can crush your enemies. Loners are easy targets because they have no friends, so you start there, but you work your way up to the popular kids who have tons of friends and therefore tons of alibies and supporters. Are you a bad enough bitch to rule the school?

I think they have games like this in japan. The problem with these sorts of games is how culturally specific they are. Damaging gossip varies between parts of the world.

I could definitely see someone making something like this on, say, iOS, though.

That's me in screenwriter mode, I guess. If I were to make a game, I'd probably focus more heavily on the story than any other aspect and make sure it had a definite beginning, middle and end. Depending on the player's actions, there could be multiple endings:

The Happy Ending: You capture the real killer and are completely exonerated.

The Sort-Of-Happy Ending: You kill your wife's murderer and end up back in prison, but you're satisfied that justice has been done.

The Bad Ending: You find the real killer, but he gets away and the police bust in and kill you before you can pursue him.

And there would be various other endings for if your escape attempt fails or the police find you before you can track down the real killer.

This is fun to think about. I kinda wish I had the programming knowledge to do it, but every time I try to read up on it, even the basics make my head spin.
