As in games, I can see where streaming will kill the hard copy market due to convenience of a mouse click. A shame since only the movie gets streamed, no behind the scenes and extras. The movies that one can own and watch anytime without the leash of a website might be a thing of the past.
Beside this something that really bugs me about streaming from Netflix is that some tv shows have a couple of episodes that are only available on disc. There doesn't even seem to be much of a pattern to it, some episodes just aren't available to stream for some reason.

Better to use a PC to preserve the console download purchased games, the restore support won't be there years from now as new consoles come out.
I imagine the 360 and PS3 hard drives are also getting a workout thru the continual rewrites as a movie dumps. If not mistaken, the Wii does not have a hard drive, perhaps the flash memory is constantly being rewritten while the movie dumps segments thru streaming? Can't be good for the longevity of each system. I plan on keeping my consoles till I die, would like the consoles to last.
Hard drives are pretty sturdy in my experience. I've got some that are over ten years old. Sometimes they do have a mechanical failure though. Flash memory is good for 100,000 rewrites or so. If there was much of a concern surely one of the companies would put out warnings, since they warn you about even the slightest hazard most of the time.
Agree, memory and hard drives last for a long time. Just something to consider for limited online support of a purchased download game. The console will eventually wear out.

Look at the size of the Wii internal memory, even with an SD Card the movies go thru the internal memory. Now take into account the size of one movie stream. A lot of rewrites just for the one movie. Now multiply the milage how many movies over a years worth of streaming.
I'm sorry, but that's just a downright silly concern. Buffers for a movie stream might be a few megabytes at most, and that's assuming there's any HDD buffering going on to begin with.

Consider this though... I'm on the $15/month plan for 2 DVDs at a time plus unlimited streaming. In order to keep what I have now, I have to pay an extra $5/month. I don't mind price hikes when I can understand them, but this just seems like bullshit. And let me clear: I've already endured NetFlix raising rates on me as well as changing services. If I want to keep my bill the same, I have to drop 1 DVD/month. But why would I want to do this? Doing so would just show NetFlix that I care less about DVDs by mail, which I don't. But at the same rate I don't wanna drop the streaming service because I do like to use it from time to time.

I love having NetFlix, don't get me wrong. For $15/month I don't feel bad if I don't use it much one month. Some months I'll abuse it. But for $20/month... Now I gotta think about stuff. Like Noise pointed out, I don't have a lot of money. The cable bill alone is ridiculous. If I were using Netflix every day, maybe I wouldn't mind. But I can't sit in front of the TV all day every day, and you have to pay the same rate no matter how much you use it. So THIS particular price raise, plus the plan split, really puts me in a pickle.
Limewater wrote:The new DVD-only plan will be $7.99. Sure, it's not as cheap as the DVD-plus-streaming plan at $9.99, but keep this in mind:

My wife and I signed up for Netflix in 2005. We signed up for the 1-DVD unlimited plan. Streaming was not available at all. Netflix was a great deal for us. We were paying $9.99 a month. They're still offering the exact same product they did six years ago, but now they're charging substantially less for it, at $7.99.
That's a good point. I don't remember the year I started NetFlix, but there wasn't any streaming when I did. Then I remember you getting some streaming with your plan. However many dollars you pay per month, that's how many hours of streaming service you got each month. Then they went to unlimited streaming, and it was awesome.

I also remember when HD-DVDs and Blu Rays were no extra cost with your plan.

edit: It's really funny that if you Google "price hike" right now, all the top hits are about NetFlix.

also, I understand that $20 isn't insane for some people. But just to look at the rate of the hike -- imagine if everyday on yr way to work you grab a cup of coffee and it's $2. Then one day it's $3.20 -- that's a big jump.

Well in my case, Netflix is still saving me a ton of money. With Netflix and PlayOn, I don't need cable. So instead of $100+ a month to get all the channels I want, I'm paying a one time fee of $80 for PlayOn and $16.00 a month for Netflix. That pays for itself in the first month!

Admittedly this may not work for everyone. For example, sports fanatics would probably have a harder time cutting the cable because a lot of the sports that PlayOn gives you access to requires memberships to others websites like MLB.com. So if you are still paying for cable, I can definitely see how the Netflix price hike stings.

I only watch Japanese TV so bit torrent is great. I don't have any other choices really. I'm not gonna wait months or years for an American DVD to come out, and then have to put up with unskipable commercials before I can watch it. I don't want to stream it because I like saving it to rewatch later.

When something comes along that surpasses bit torrent for Japanese media, I will jump on board.

Besides Japanese media, I do watch a lot of Youtube videos. People like The Happy Console Gamer, Pete Door, Total Biscuit, etc. Thanks to ad blockers, I don't see any ads on Youtube, otherwise I wouldn't be able to watch these great shows.
