The end boss? Actually the bosses were all a bit tame by series standards-last boss especially...

Before I can even attempt to talk about the new DmC I have to ask two questions.

First off, why so much DMC4 hate in here? I saw some people complain about the backtracking (Which I admit, I enjoy backtracking a lot more than most people), but you'd think a site full of retro gamers would have a pretty good tolerance for that. And even so, Nero plays so differently from Dante that I barely noticed I was going through the same area's. And I don't understand how anyone can say the combat in 4 was any worse than the previous entries. The ability to access all of your weapons without going through a menu and switch styles at any time (Instead of only at the beginning of every mission) is a bad thing?

Secondly:

What? Extra content = dumbed down? What, cause they added in an extra easier difficulty level? You do know you don't -have- to play the easier difficulty, right? All the other, harder, difficulty levels are still there in the special edition.

I don't "hate" DMC4, and in fact would say it is on the top half of games I've enjoyed this generation - I just don't like it near as much when compared to DMC3. To me, DMC3 is pretty much perfection. DMC4, which I very much anticipated, felt like a step back in every category that mattered to me (primarily combat and level design). So yes, the backtracking, the poorer selection of weapons, the comparatively forgiving nature of the combat/combo system, poorer AI, etc. DMC4 feels rushed in almost every way imaginable, ESPECIALLY in the categories that I care most about in the series.

I saw the move of the SE to make the default difficulty to an easier one as indicative of a shift towards making the series more accessible/simpler. It might be prickish of me to not want that, but I didn't. The extras were cool, I guess, but I found that they disrupted what was already a well paced game. The virtually instant respawns and what not - again, to make the game easier - also took a lot away in terms of forcing players to learn the systems and excel at them to progress. I get the marketing strategy behind the SE, and there's stuff there to like, but the default game on the default setting in the SE is nerfed. And while the other difficulties are still there, as best as I can remember they were all rebalanced in different ways (with the exception of DMD mode).

Again, I don't hate DMC4. DMC3SE is great fun. Neither is as good as DMC3 in my book, though.

The real change in difficulty was undoing the changes that were done to the game's western release. It would be more accurate to say they put it back to normal, than to say they simplified it.

In the original western version of DMC 3, default mode was hard mode of the Japanese version, which obviously you aren't supposed to attempt until you've cleared the game and unlocked it. So it was putting players in a game that is already difficult, in a mode that is meant for a NG+ run by an experienced player. Sounds like fun to me, but not everyone enjoys that kind of punishment. Enough people whined about it to get Capcom to re-release it with the original difficulty settings.

This was pretty commonly done in the early eras of gaming, but it was really weird to see it with a PS2 game.

No, you do. The other difficulties are still there but you have to unlock them. Unless you use the code, you have to start with the default difficulty or easy.

What is it with me and Ninja Theory's glitches  This one has the protagonist from Enslaved falling through an endless void. The game controls like wank too.
