Love seeing this. Literally everyplace else I can see, people are crapping all over the game.
I proudly crap all over this game. Its pretty rare that a game manages to be both awful AND insulting, and cool monster animations just can't save it.

Kids in the 90s were good, if not better at games than most adults. Pokemon, as Gunstar said, is how you get kids into the genre. Easy to get into, endless gameplay, multiplayer since kids are at school/church/whatever, and a fairly high top-end for difficulty. Oh, and its not "Hey pleb, we don't even respect you enough to let you equip your own gear", its an actual game.

Mystic Quest was my first taste of what fetch quests feel like in MMOs. Going through the motions, with no invigorating thought whatsoever. Except at least MMOs go somewhere with it, the tedium can lead to something interesting, instead of a final boss that dies in one hit.

...Yeah, I really dislike this game, possibly even more than Bone dislikes modern FF games.

As Drunk says in his review - what Mystic Quest set out to do it does correctly. Sure it's a beginners game but it's a well-made beginners game.

I really don't think Mystic Quest was geared towards young kids as much as it was made for people who wanted to play and complete a JRPG without worrying too much about grinding, stats, and so on.

Speaking of Pokémon, that's a series I was never able to get into. Perhaps part of it is due to age and lack of nostalgia - I was already 16 or so when it started to get big - but I find those games rather slow and redundant.

I've never really thought of Pokémon games as "JRPGs" either, even though they technically are. I tend to just think of them as "Pokémon games" just as Paper Mario is more of a "Mario game" to me than a JRPG.

Mystic Quest is a good game... it's not one of my all-time favorites, but I think as an experience it's solid. It's got great music, easy to follow storyline and entertaining characters.

As a kid I didn't like how you could never be a higher level then your companions. It seemed kinda weird when you consider you're supposed to be this world-saving hero and the guys that just join your team are always higher level then you. I also sort of wish it had a larger party system then 2 as some of the characters in the game would've been fun as fully fleshed out companion characters for the full game.

But yeah, great review SNESdrunk. :)

If I may recommend a game not many people talk about that I think should be talked about a bit... Equinox.

Great music (by the wonderful Folin), good colorful graphics, challenge based on level design and not poor controls or design... it's an underappreciated gem for what it is IMO. I always wished there was another sequel.
It's on the list. A list that's like 50+ games long now.
Haha... I hear that.

That looked pretty cool. While you were talking about influences, I started noticing parts that reminded me of Mega Man, Batman: Return of the Joker, and GI Joe. That is some excellent pedigree.
Plus you can't go wrong with the cover art of either region either. You've got Bruce Willis or Patrick Swayze.
Also, how many other games have Chinese hopping vampires for enemies? That is awesome!

Phantom Fighter! I know this is the SNES review thread but PF isn't as bad as you may think. The Engrish is about the only thing that's horrible.

Cool.

The only Football game I've played on the SNES has been Tecmo Super Bowl (1). I mean, I've played others, but just for like 5 minutes or less. Tecmo Super Bowl is the only one that I actually played and won (or lost) a game. It just clicked with me and everything else seemed like it sucked by comparison.

I was aware that there were sequels, but I never tried them. I guess I was afraid they wouldn't be as good. Glad to hear that they're improvements though, and 3 looks like a nice graphical update. I'll have to check them out at some point.

Long ago, I found this way of being ridiculously good at Tecmo Super Bowl. There's this one play where you can almost always have an insanely long completed pass, and usually score a touchdown too. I would backpedal as the quarter back, and keep going back and back until the defense is just about to tackle, then pass the ball. The guy you're passing to has ran an equal distance in the opposite direction, and even odder, no one on defense bothered to follow him. So when you pass the ball, it travels like half the stadium or more and he always catches it because no one is covering. Then no one is around you so you can just start running for the end zone, and you can usually make it too. Even if you don't, you gained a million yards in one play.

It's ridiculous, and it sort of breaks the game, but I always found it hilarious. I guess it works because there's no cap on passing. I'm pretty sure you can throw the football from one end zone to the other, if your players were set up that way. Passing should have had a max yard cap on it, or that power bar type deal like kicking, something so you can't break the game like this. Although, it's not just the way passing works. For some reason, that one play causes the receiver to run out in the opposite direction equal to how far you run. And I guess since no defense is around him, he always has 100% chance of catching the ball.

So has anyone else played Tecmo 1 like this? I've tried doing this on a couple other plays and it doesn't work. I wonder if it works on other plays, since there's a lot of them that I've never tried.

Damn right you start off the Bill Walsh section with Alabama scoring a touchdown.

Anyway, I own a handful of these but have never really gotten into football-based video games. Do you have one in particular that you think would be good for a beginner to cut his teeth on in the genre?

I like 3 better, but the play select screen is kind of a mess and can take a bit to figure out. That's really the only downside.

Every variation of Tecmo Bowl has something like this, it's great. Tecmo Super Bowl for NES has this play for the Vikings, fake end-around that leaves a WR wide open way downfield 9 times out of 10.

I would say one of the NFL Quarterback Club games because they're so offense-friendly.
