Glad to hear someone else thinks so. Gimme Link to the Past any day.

I just started Suikoden IV, the black sheep of the family. It's as bad as I'd expected, yet it fulfills my rather simple, yet apparently difficult, requirement of being a modern RPG that is turn-based and devoid of any complex systems (no necessary item or spell creation business, no weird timed-attack battles, etc). Probably the hardest things in the game are the minigames and the one-on-one battle (or rather the duels WOULD be hard if it wasn't for the fact that your opponent basically tells you their next move). It's funny but this one seems really simplified from earlier Suikodens, even. The army battles are now strategy ship battles, which come down to picking the right runes. Stupidly easy, imo.

Yes, the ocean travel is tedious, but that's hardly the worst part of the game. The worst part is that the storyline is very bland and cliched (so far anyway). It really feels like the people who worked on this game got lazy and just slapped something together. Really shame, especially since this came after such a solid entry in the series. But I'll keep playing it. Can't really find anything else decent to play that fits my requirements, and I really want to finish the Suikoden series at some point (and my OCD forces me to play them in order).
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

These days I'm doing postgame Grottos in DQ9 and am slowly working through the fan translation of Tales of Innocence.

You poor bastard. I tried to play through it at least 3 times, but I never got more than 5 or 6 hours in before I couldn't take it anymore. I really want to beat it before I start Tactics or V, but I doubt that's going to happen

Still working slowly on Front Mission 3, which I've been doing since at least March...maybe even February, I don't remember anymore.

I will say it a million times, no older game with a strong following like that will ever live up to the hype surrounding it. If you seriously go in with those kinds of expectations you're setting yourself up for dissapointment.

Just sayin'

I kind of figured that going in. Nostalgia and all that plays a big part in how people feel about those games. It's the same thing with Final Fantasy VII. I don't think that game was as great as everybody remembers it either. However, I still figured Ocarina of time was something I needed to play at some point, but I think I liked Link to the Past more, or even other n64 offerings (Banjo kazooie has been my favorite so far). Before about 2 months ago, the only 64 games I played were Goldeneye and Mario Kart and friends houses when i was younger.

I think nostalgia is a factor but it would probably help to put yourself in someone's shoes who has been playing the games of that era and to obtain the newest Zelda game - Ocarina of Time. You are blown away by the great graphics in 3D for the first time. The gameplay is awesome as new concepts of "context sensitive actions" & "z-targeting" is introduced. The camera for the game is just perfect.

Up until that time, you had Legend of Zelda & Adventures of Link on the NES, Link to the Past on the SNES and Link's Awakening on the Gameboy. It's been 5!! years since the last Zelda game (Link's Awakening), 7 years since the last console Zelda.

I think if you have all of that in context, you would probably think Ocarina of Time was really awesome.

Personally, I haven't played OOT yet but I intend to do so later this year. I will try to appreciate it from that perspective.

That game is quickly approaching in my backlog queue. Is it going to be as massive a time suck as I've heard?

Right now I am playing Dragonball: Origins

It's surprisingly good for a anime licensed action-rpg. It feels almost as solid as Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
