Glad to hear someone else thinks so. Gimme Link to the Past any day.
I just started Suikoden IV, the black sheep of the family. It's as bad as I'd expected, yet it fulfills my rather simple, yet apparently difficult, requirement of being a modern RPG that is turn-based and devoid of any complex systems (no necessary item or spell creation business, no weird timed-attack battles, etc). Probably the hardest things in the game are the minigames and the one-on-one battle (or rather the duels WOULD be hard if it wasn't for the fact that your opponent basically tells you their next move). It's funny but this one seems really simplified from earlier Suikodens, even. The army battles are now strategy ship battles, which come down to picking the right runes. Stupidly easy, imo.
Yes, the ocean travel is tedious, but that's hardly the worst part of the game. The worst part is that the storyline is very bland and cliched (so far anyway). It really feels like the people who worked on this game got lazy and just slapped something together. Really shame, especially since this came after such a solid entry in the series. But I'll keep playing it. Can't really find anything else decent to play that fits my requirements, and I really want to finish the Suikoden series at some point (and my OCD forces me to play them in order).
