I don't blame them for not wanting to pay to license Blu-Ray. I hope nobody forgets that Nintendo or Microsoft licensing Blu-Ray is paying Sony money. I could see them not including an actual Blu-Ray drive just for the pride issue.

My question is, what kind of storage with this console use? Will it use a Blu-Ray version of the Wii Drive, where the Wii used DVD's but they didn't want to license it to play DVD movies? Or will it use some proprietary high capacity disc format like the GD-ROM. I seriously hope they won't continue to use regular DVDs. My money is something proprietary disc like the GD-ROM only with near BD capacity, for piracy reasons, and pride reasons.

It was announced that it was proprietary discs that hold around 25GB, iirc.

No hard drive though :roll:

Again I will say, until Nintendo outright says something about the new console, dont dig into it too much. I remember before the Wii came out several news outlets ran a story of "Wii uses Gamecube memory cards instead of a harddrive." Until Nintendo says whats going to happen, treat it all as bunk.

There are two things that large hard drives have given us this gen:

1. Download full copies of retail games (instead of buying the disc)
2. Cache multiple gigs of game data so you don't have to optimize your load times during development

Neither is essential. Regular DLC is perfectly servicable with flash memory.

I think Nintendo's problem with a HDD is that they fail way too much, and they want to put something of higher quality into one of their products. They clearly have run into an issue with another type of storage medium that is sufficiently cheap, at a high enough capacity.

While I don't disagree with HDDs failing...so do flash memory solutions. None of it lasts forever.

Probably their bigger concern is cost and space/heat considerations within the device.

I still like Sony's take on it for the PS3 - off-the-shelf 2.5" HDD that's user upgradeable.

32 gig SD card. Problem solved. Much better than an HDD. I hate old style hard drives because they break too easily.

Platter harddrives can take quite a bit of punishment. If off you can drop most from a fair distance and they will still work. If on, then yeah its dead. The issue with space will be more for downloadable games. On the Wii there was a game size limit of 50 megs, so games like Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim passed on the console - even though they would be excellent fits

I'd like to see Nintendo utilize less annoying sounds during Wii U Menu navigation. I really have to watch my volume whenever browsing my Wii Menu, as it barely has to be up whatsoever for its various pings to be ear-shattering.

Seriously, shit makes me wince! A simple *click* sound effect would've served the console so much better imho.

The problem with that is this:

SanDisk 32GB SDHC Card: $51.70

You get way more space for the same amount of money. Obviously Nintendo wouldn't be paying retail prices, but I bet their prices are proportional.
