When I think of quality in a library I remove the sports games. You are gonna have them and few ever age well. (some do) Then look at the games that have busted controls and games that brought nothing but frustration. Take into account the time and whatever is left is generally what average gamer plays. (please do not go off topic and debate the formula). When I do that to the Wii U I see a lot of games with appeal to a lot of players. Where as there are fewer games that get tossed on the "filler" or replacement case pile.
It has its crap but no where near the rate as some other consoles. When I do all of this though I keep in mind that this systems is appealing to the kid in me more often than not, but that is fine, growing up sucks anyway. If I did grow up could I still be a Toys R Us kid?

PS1 has plenty of quality games but if you go back to that time period you had a better chance of buying an awful game on the PS1 than the N64 if you weren't informed. You know like christmas presents you didn't ask for. N64 has a much better ratio of good to crap games.dsheinem wrote:That was nonsense then and it is nonsense now.Tanooki wrote:quality over quantity argument N64 lover used against PS1 fans in the 90s.

I guess in terms of whether you're likely to find a good game in a pile of random ones the N64 probably gets a bit of a nod in its favor but... that's kinda a really strange way to evaluate a system's library I think.
PS1 has the better library overall, and it's got a lot more variety. N64's appeal is fairly narrow by comparison.

Sure, because the PS1 was cheaper to develop for, smaller companies could actually afford to throw their hat into the ring. Some games were shit, some were amazing, but none had that same chance on the N64.pepharytheworm wrote:PS1 has plenty of quality games but if you go back to that time period you had a better chance of buying an awful game on the PS1 than the N64 if you weren't informed. The PS1 game count is in the thousands, so of course there is going to be some shit on it it, however the N64 has roughly 300 games (in NA), of which 30 odd were made by Rare, Nintendo or HAL. So literally 1 in 10 games on the system are of the highest quality, so if you got a game on a punt you have a 1 in 10 chance of getting gold, not because the system had "quality over quantity", the PS1 more than likely has over 300 (N64 library size) quality games, it is just a number game. Low amount of releases by third parties paired with the fact only companies with a bit of money could afford to develop on the N64.
I am with Dave, utter nonsense then, utter nonsense now.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I'm aware of that. I was pointing it out in the third person, not my own opinion of things. The only truth of it others pointed out. In a random bag of games for PS1 and N64, due to the lack of N64 releases you have a greater chance of finding something that isn't a turd. That's not saying much though considering the system barely eeked out 300 games versus like a couple thousand on PS1.dsheinem wrote:That was nonsense then and it is nonsense now.Tanooki wrote:quality over quantity argument N64 lover used against PS1 fans in the 90s.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I think people get the misconception that N64 has higher quality of games over PSX is because the N64 had a some really iconic games and exclusives at the same time. Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, and such were very revolutionary at that time.
The truth is PSX had the same with RE, MGS, and FF7 but since the N64 had a lot less releases the Triple A titles shined a lot more because people were focused on them, creating this false misconception.
@wclem
I always saw 3DS and 3DS titles selling a lot, but I hear Nintendo continues to report losses which confuses me
@Forlorn
which 6 games do you have for N64?

Aren't you the guy who made this same argument for reasons why the Sega 32X and Sega CD are two of the best game machines ever?dsheinem wrote:That was nonsense then and it is nonsense now.Tanooki wrote:quality over quantity argument N64 lover used against PS1 fans in the 90s.

I've made the argument that no system has a higher percentage of non-shitty games than than 32X.Ack wrote:Aren't you the guy who made this same argument for reasons why the Sega 32X and Sega CD are two of the best game machines ever?dsheinem wrote:That was nonsense then and it is nonsense now.Tanooki wrote:quality over quantity argument N64 lover used against PS1 fans in the 90s.
