You'd think they'd just pay the codec licensing fees.
Yes, we know that. We just don't care because we aren't looking at the Wii U to provide our DVD watching capabilities. I support Nintendo in this venture. I like having dedicated devices for things.
And that's why they continue to sell units.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

I dont. I have a home theater pc hooked up to my tv. I have no need for a dvd playing console.

Costs a fair bit more than that. Probably more like $25-30 per machine to do DVD and Blu-Ray, with DVD being most of it.

Same, though in fairness, I use my PS3 for DVD/Blu-ray. I just use the PC for streaming/files/etc. Still, I don't care much if consoles support it. I'd rather they focus on playing games.

If it's THAT much I wonder how they manage to make $30 dvd players?

I think you missed the AND there AppleQueso. DVD AND Bluray, not or.
DVD licensing is somewhat broken down here. Wikipedia lists the DVD fees as $15-20 per player, which would allow for $30 players to still have room to turn a profit.
That said, some of what'd be necessary may already be getting paid for too.
I don't really get why anyone cares that it can't play dvds or blurays. I have 3 machines that do dvd and one that does bluray plugged into my main tv already, plus I have another system that play dvds in my bedroom, and two laptops. I really have no use of anything else that plays dvds. As it is I only really use my PS3 for movies because it's the best of the bunch. I know not everyone that Nintendo is targeting has that much tech laying around, but I don't think I've seen anyone without a dvd player in years.
Now if they gave it good support for digital formats that'd be awesome. The 360 and PS3 both kinda suck in that regard. But I'd be extremely surprised if Nintendo were to do that.
