I am intrigued... though not many RPGs, strategy games, or sports games will apply. Not sure what 3 games I would choose to try...

What about Legacy of the Wizard, The Goonies II, or F-Zero X? I am trying to come up with old, difficult games that I haven't beaten and aren't difficult due only to antiquated (or broken) mechanics.

EDIT: I can't wait to read what Sarge picks...
Having beat it on master difficulty, I don't think FZero X is all that bad. Not easy sure, but not notably brutal either.

GX, on the other hand...

That is indeed the hardest part.

Hell, I have that problem even without the challenge structure.
You will have until July 1st to finalize your three picks. Lots of time to ruminate and get approved.

I could help you choose some short yet hard RPGs, SRPGs, and the like. I'm sure we could bang some choices out for you if you're really interested. I don't know squat about sports games though. If I have a gaming scholarly weakness, that's it.

I thought of a better way to utilize Ack. Instead of being a judge tie-breaker, he will always act as a fourth judge for judging judges' picks:

Judge 1 picks out a game, now it is up to Judge 2, Judge 3, and Judge Ack to decide if Judge 1's pick is worthy or not. Judge 2 picks out a game, now it is up to Judge 1, Judge 3, and Judge Ack to decide if Judge 2's pick is worthy or not.

I hope that makes sense. If not I can explain it better.

---

I think we're still sitting at 8 contestants. Just need 2 more!
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Most of the struggle in sports games will be against a human opponent.

I basically enjoy most genres except for platformers. I also have a very limited shmup collection, but I do have some.

Though, a platform that I suppose I could try again that is difficult is the original NES Turtles.

What about artificially imposed challenges (FF1 with 4 thieves) or games playing with a higher or highest difficulty?

I'm too OCD for this.

prfsnl_gmr wrote:Life Force is a good shmup for people who aren't fans of the genre. It is much better than Gradius. It also isn't that hard, but if you are new to the genre, it will be tough.
I don't know, I've 1CCed Gradius on the PSP collection before, and find Life Force to be much more difficult. Unless you're talking about the NES versions. In which case, you can't see it, but I'm waving a cane at you.

So, you all are going to force me to actually beat Xanadu, and Dragon Slayer IV, huh? Next I'll be running without going anywhere, and talking down a lion and unicorn with plum cake.

Here's a list:

1. Ecco the Dolphin (Genesis or Sega CD)
2. Xanadu (Saturn)
3. Dragon Slayer IV (Famicom) Disregard. Making this Umihara Kawase.

I doubt I'll get far with these. I don't think Xanadu could actually be finished without outside help, and I've only ever really made it to level 4. This kid spent a month just getting to the dragon. (at timestamp 7:17)

Also there would probably have to be some caveat to Dragon Slayer IV. I think "beating" it with the dog is supposed to be fairly easy, but beating it with all the characters would be extremely time consuming.

Hmm sports, eh? Well, I've got a couple ideas:

Reggie Jackson Baseball (SMS) - believe there is a shorter tournament/playoff mode vs. full season.

Baseball Stars Professional (NG - but on a bunch of comps) - defeat the arcade mode

Team USA Basketball (GEN) - play the Olympics, level of difficulty based on the country you select - but the game play is so archaic now that the game is hard even as team USA.

American Gladiators (NES) - hey sports but platform/action stuff that is really hard on the NES.

A challenge here is measuring good game play + a strong challenge vs. shitty sports AI that is out of your control.

I know these are up Dave's alley too - could have a last man standing contest with NBA Jam and NFL Blitz. Who can get the furthest?
