Apparently I'm stupid. I've even tried "timing" with a stop watch, still, no lefties.
Which fans do you mean?

Flying battery I assume?

Just hold the direction you want to go as you press the jump button. No timing necessary.

That's what I assumed too. I fired the game up on my DS quick to make sure I hadn't gone crazy.

Just so the Retron 5 users know there's a new firmware that came out a few days ago, 2.3 BETA 1 that improves Genesis compatibility, you can get it here.

Guess I'll be playing on the Retron 5 with save states. I assume it recognizes the game as S3&K when locked together?
On my retron it comes up as 'Unknown game' but if you click to start anyway it'll load as Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
The stock original software won't recognize it, but anything after the first update should recognize Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It might take a few attempts but it should get it.

Just make sure you're not running version 2.2 software for the Retron or Sonic 3 will crash back to the menu occasionally.
It's never been able to detect Sonic 3 & Knuckles for me, maybe it's because I have the PAL carts.

Anyhow, I spent a good chunk of today playing this, and finally beat the game with all the chaos emeralds and super emeralds, as Sonic.

This was actually my first classic sonic game where I've been able to play as Super Sonic or Hyper Sonic, so it was pretty cool getting to try them out.

I still like Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 more than this game, but I do enjoy Sonic 3 quite a bit. It has some definite lows but some pretty good high points too.

Next weekend, if I have time, I might go for Hyper Tails.

It'd be fun going through the game as Tails.... it's strange, but if you think about it, playing as Sonic is playing the game gimped of any extra 'abilities'. Tails and Knuckles have everything Sonic has, except that Tails can also fly and Knuckles can glide and climb walls.

I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but does playing as Tails + Sonic together allow Sonic to cling on to Tails for flight?
edit: Apparently it's only possible in the Multiplayer mode; makes sense.

Sonic has a higher jump than Knuckles. You'll notice there's a few times you can't hit a boss right away as Knuckles, and it's much more apparent in Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 2 when you get to the third boss (can't remember the name of the zone).

Aquatic Ruin.

The low jump forces a different strategy for the final boss at Death Egg as well. Knuckles has to be much more patient than Sonic or Tails do in that fight.

Additionally, Sonic does have a few moves his compatriots do not have. The first is the extra effects he gets with his shields, which is most useful with the fire shield. But he also has the split second shield when he double jumps naked, and that can be used to cancel some projectiles.

Tails gets ripped off, he only has a super transformation and he needs all 14 emeralds for it but it's a really cool transformation.

Yeah, Sonic's insta-shield isn't flashy but it's incredibly useful and some go as far as to say overpowered. Once you learn how to use it Sonic is the most efficient boss buster of the three by far.

Knuckles is often considered the game's hard mode due to his lackluster jump but he also ends the game at Sky Sanctuary for story purposes with one of my favorite bosses in the game (even though he's super easy).
