Whats the Most Overrated Game?

I've come to terms with the fact that videogames themselves are overrated. That doesn't stop me from enjoying them.

As far as individual games go, I don't really believe ANY are. If you didn't find a particular game as fun as most others claim, that's just fine. But it's probably just overrated to you personally.

Maybe you didn't like it for the very same reasons others did, or even disliked it for a small reason that most overlook or find irrelevant (like immature jokes in GTA V, as mentioned; not that I have any love for the series either).

Maybe those sentiments are a given though.

Because it's a simple game you can play with the nephews.
Also, they gotta' learn that certain activities are pointless somehow.

What do you think is the most overrated game you've ever seen?

For me it's a tie between:

Halo: Combat Evolved

and

999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

Well, I could give a troll answer and piss off everybody, or I could give a serious answer and piss off everybody. Man, I can never win in this game of Life. Oh well, here it goes anyway:


Duck Tales (NES)

It's a decent platformer, with good graphics and good music, but that's about it. I don't think it's that amazing like everybody says it is. Oh and I could go possibly the rest of my existence without hearing the Moon Theme for the 564th time. It's like the first Dr. Wily theme from Mega Man 2. Overplayed to the point of nausea. It's not even my favorite song in the game (I'm not sure which one it is, either the Mines or the Himalayas, but certainly NOT the Moon). OK so maybe not quite MY choice for most overrated game, but it's the one I thought of posting (at least the ones I had). It's not a bad game, but I don't think it's nearly as great as everyone says it is.

On topic, I have to defend my boy Halo. 13 years ago console games simply did not have sweeping battles raging around the player as they moved through a scene. It was brand new at the time and pretty mind-blowing. Being able to pick up alien weapons was cool, and the shield system has been copied.....I'd say 6,000 times since the original Halo came out.

On a more general note but still relating to the above, I think a ton of these games are based on people playing them for the first time years after release. You're simply not going to enjoy Resident Evil as much 5 years later after the market's been flooded with atmospheric survival horror games for instance. Doesn't mean it's overrated.

Yeah, the shield system became the prototype for the regenerating health system that so many of us complain about now.

I do think Halo is overrated. But I was used to playing PC FPS when it came out, so it didn't 'Wow' me nearly as much. I will give it credit for continuing on and really cementing the console FPS multiplayer gains made by GoldenEye(though whether I think that this is a good thing is a different story). But the grenade mechanics that it used were definitely interesting.

The Persona games. I like them, I have them, but I think they're sub-par compared to the rest of the MegaTen series.

Are there any series that HAVEN'T been mentioned? I'd say this is a "list every game series, eventually" thread, basically.

I'd say Croc on the PS1 is over-rated because some people like it and it flat out sucks.
