Yeah, these. 2006-2010 would easily disqualify me from a week of participation.
Nothing before 1990 either?

Added a poll on when to announce games. Hopefully there is a clear majority preference...

I think everyone submitting their 4 picks should read the last 3 pages here and take all preferences into account when making their picks.

'90-'95 - Raiden ll
'96-'00 - Blazing Star
'01-'05 - Dimahoo
'06-'10 - Castle of Shikigami lll/Shikigami no Shiro lll

Let me know if these aren't easily emulated or just sucky picks.

Raiden II still has emulation issues, AFAIK.
I'd love to do Blazing Star, but again I hope that would qualify for an SOTM pick next year if someone so chooses.

Because of the issues with some people not being able to play certain recent(ish) games, how about making 4 categories as follows:

1981 - 1990
1991 - 1995
1996 - 2000
2001 - 2010

That way you've got a good range of picks from old school (lots of classics released between 1985 - 1989, seems unfair to leave them out) to newer releases, and if the 2001 - 2010 category has more picks from earlier in the decade, then there should be less of a problem with people being able to play those games...

I like this. 1981-1990 is a good wide net, and I like the bigger focus with 2 picks from 1991-2000 because most shmups were released in those years. 2001-2010 should be no trouble to find something easily emulate-able from the first few years of that range.

My thought to start at 1990 was that most shmups prior to 1990 don't have much to scoring mechanics (other than shoot stuff) - which is the point of an STGT.

Oof. Good point. I was thinking about games just prior to 1990 that had a scoring mechanic, perhaps something from Toaplan, and I couldn't. 2006-2010 is gonna be rough going for me unless there's some indie game I can get for cheap, I'm not in the 7th gen and don't have access to those type of games.
