Ever watched a soap opera? That weird, super smooth look they have?

You don't want movies to look like THAT do you? Higher than 24fps in movies makes them look cheap and unnatural.
That's why British TV shows usually look so cheap and fake. They're videotaped at 60 FPS, IIRC. I don't want my movies to look like that.
That explains so much Boring! It seems like they don't tape Doctor Who like that though...

A lot of this is also due to what you're used to, not what actually has the potential to look good. Give that same higher framerate to something like sports, and it's a clear improvement.

Oh, I know its what I'm used to, I just never understood why really. I knew they were shot different, but didn't how it was different.

If it's 50 fields per second, that's 25 frames per second. The "natural" frame rate for films is 24. Not such a big difference.

That's what I said, but the thread is derailing on its own

No I don't mind the posts about the films at all, I like it when they branch out, but I specified that this thread isn't about "gameplay being more important and graphics not mattering" or "good artwork makes up for the graphic engine being average". We have 200 threads about those things.

Recent games and movies have gotten to the point where I don't even know what to complain about anymore.
