Having beat every main Final Fantasy game prior to playing XIII I understand why people see it in a negative light. I just think those people are imposing definitions that don't exist onto the product and then complaining when it doesn't meet those definitions. It's like complaining that a convertible doesn't have sufficient towing capacity.brunoafh wrote:@noiseredux
I wouldn't say your taste is too weird, although it is surprisingly to hear you haven't finished IV or VI. I'd say your opinion is pretty much in line with "the average" FF fan, except for XIII. I refuse to ever cut that disaster any slack. I think BoneSnapDeez is onto something though, perhaps if you had completed some of the FF games that most consider to define the franchise, you might see why XIII is seen in huge a negative light. Then again you've been with the series from the beginning, so I dunno. If you enjoy it that's all that really matters.
Like many entries in long-lasting franchises, XIII may not necessarily be a bad game, but it's a very bad Final Fantasy game.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
Alright the big list, I will try my hand...
Final Fantasy I - Haven't played it.
II - Also havent played it.
III - The DS release was part of my motivation to buy a DS. The RPGs were starting to come over. This game ended up being kind of meh to me. Too grindy for my tastes. I got about 2/3 of the way in and switched off to something else.
IV - I love this game. Played it way back in the SNES days and tried to emulate it a few times over the years too but I didn't actually beat it until recently. I finally beat this playing the DS version right before the PSP version was announced. I will give it some time and go and tackle the highly regarded PSP port at a future date. This is my 2nd or 3rd favorite in the series.
V - I remember enjoying it, but haven't played in a long time. I emulated the translated rom 10+ years ago. I have the GBA port and it is on my list to play.
VI - My favorite FF and one of my favorite games of all time. I have played through and beat this one several times on SNES and GBA. I love the music, world, characters, and story.
VII - Always been in the 'it is good but overrated' camp. I was pretty hooked when I played it when it first released. I got right to the end and didn't beat it for whatever reason. I've thought about going back and replaying it several times, but then I think about not being able to skip the summoning cutscenes and I change my mind lol. One of my biggest complaints in this was dropping the characters in party from 4 or 5 to 3...
VIII - Probably lower on my list. I dont remember hating the game, but it also didnt hold my attention and I just got bored with it.
IX - I really enjoy this one. I think of it as the lost FF in a way, or the one most overlooked. This came out late in the PS1 cycle and after some people hated VIII, they moved on from the series. I like most of the characters, and I liked the world. I did hate that the main character had a tail though lol, not sure why. I would rank either this or FFIV as my 2nd favorite FF.
X - I have mixed feelings on this one. A good game but I didnt like most of the characters. Graphics were nice, but I also didnt like the overly weird and quirky world and story. Half the time I had to ask myself wtf is going on?
X-2 - Refused to play this. Didn't appeal to me in the slightest.
XI - Enjoyed for a time, but dont really consider the MMOs in these conversations.
XII - I really enjoyed this game and I dont think it deserves the hate. It does take a big departure from the traditional battle systems, but I didn't mind it. I can understand those who stick to traditional turn based battles only would be turned off by this. I like the world and some of the characters. I really enjoyed the more mature and political plot. Reminded me of FFT. I didnt like Vaan and Penelo much, but most of the supporting cast was solid.
XIII - Graphics are amazing and battle system is solid. I hated the characters and the world and plot didn't do it for me. I didnt like the linearity of it and it just didnt feel like a FF game. I was close to the end of the game when my PS3 died and I lost my save files therefore...
XIII-2 - I probably wont ever play this because I didn't finish XIII
XIV - Horrible MMO
FFT - I really love this game as well. If we include the tactics games, this would be #2 or 3 on my FF list easily. I love tactics games and this one was well polished and I cared about the story and plot. I think the game lacks balance at time and makes certain characters too powerful.
FFTA - Ehh decent game but did enough for me to not like it as well. I didnt like the story and the law system was meh. I also didnt like how you create the map as you go. The multitude of races and class combinations was great though. I loved all the combinations.
FFTA2 - A great improvement over FFTA. Expanded on the things I liked about the first and got rid of some of my complaints. A solid game I was hooked on for a bit.
I never played Mystic Quest, but I think I would hate it. I also haven't played the 4 heroes of light or other spinoffs.
Final Fantasy I - Haven't played it.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
Some spinoffs are the best, though. Like Tactics! Tactics is the best Final Fantasy game. Crisis Core and Dissidia are much better games than XIII (which I did like, it was pretty and relaxing).
Gotta cut the spinoffs some slack. And, X-2? It's awesome.

Sounds like a good time to me.finished product is a ridiculous pop star adventure with dress up games and some bizarre combat system.

I would have to agree that FF has some killer spin-offs, Tactics definitely being a pinnacle of the entire franchise.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:Some spinoffs are the best, though. Like Tactics! Tactics is still my favorite. Have the most memories, best gameplay. VI is good too but I never completed it.
Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
I havent been on this site in awhile due to work but ill throw mine out there:
FF1: Got this game when it first came out when i was 6. Frustrated the hell out of me but i loved it, Took about 2 years but i got through it, with the help of my nintendo's players guide though. I dont know what was worse, my shitty nes that kept resetting itself, the game pack that would erase saves, or the game itself. As each remake came out i picked them up and beat them. I have a soft spot for the game, as basic as it is, for its time it was a good game. I like the look and feel of the originals but the remakes do make the game far easier, no more spending hours buying heals haha.
FF2: Played this game the first time in FF origins then on the psp. The stat system was pretty rough, but enjoyed playing through it. I later got a translated rom cart of the original, that made me really appreciate the remakes.
FF3: I liked the idea of the game, but never got into it. I played the ugly DS remake first, didnt get far before i got tired of it. I also got a translated rom cart of the nes version of this as well, played through a bit but lost interest. Dont know why but the game just didnt feel right.
FF4: Im a fanboy of this game all day. Got it when it came out as well, i cant remember how many times i beat this game. I own every remake, still play them, and i even have a half sleeve tattoo ive started for this game haha. I know it has its faults, but the story and game play is 16 bit bliss. Maybe im blinded by childhood memories, but i think this game is awesome. My second favorite.
FF5: Played on the ps1, good game but i never felt anything too much for it. The job system is fun but i feel its more suited to FF tactics then this game. The story is kinda weak since so much focus is on the job system. I can def see why this game wasnt released stateside back in the day. Not a bad game at all, but not my taste.
FF6: My favorite FF game. Another game that makes me feel good when i think about it. Gameplay is top notch, every character has their own use (until the end when you can kind of break everyone), the story is great for a 16 bit era game. Kefka is the best evil character in my opinion. I recently did a speed run of this game, which was tough because no matter how many times i play it i always wanna complete everything in the game.
FF7: The debatable game. Watched friends play it before it came out, got it, beat it, and have never been able to pick it up again. The graphics havent aged well and neither have the characters. Materia system gets repetitive, and i think i used to have nightmares about watching Knights of the Round over and over again. Cool when it came out, but not the best FF in my eyes. Didnt care for much of the fan service, however i am guilty of enjoying Crisis Core, if for the story more than anything.
FF8: Beat it once, never want to play it again. Didnt care for the emo story, didnt like the draw system. I was pissed when i slaved to get all the damn card battle cards and all i got was a yellow star next to the card listing on the menu. The lack of exploration and shitty town design killed me considering how much there was to discover in the 16 bit games (and ff7).
FF9: Wanted to like this game, but never did. Im sure its a good game, but the characters never drew me in. Maybe i should give it another chance someday.
FF10: Friends all liked it, i never cared too much for it. Got 3/4 of the way through and lost interest (this was also during college so i had other things to focus on
). To me story was bland.
FF11: Got it, upgraded my pc for it, played it 2 months, realized i can never be an MMORPG guy. End of story haha. Havent played 14 but to me this is the worst game in the main series even though it shouldnt be.
FF12: Bought it on release day and it has never made it into my ps2.
FF13: Not interested at all, call me ignorant but i have no desire to try.
FFT: Great game, enjoyed the game play and got sucked into the story. Frustrating at times but worth it. Spent many hours playing this.
Basically im stuck on the older entries. Maybe because i grew up on them and have nostalgic goggles for them. I can understand someone playing them now for the first time may prefer the more modern entries and why someone like me cant except the change of the new ones.
