He always cracks jokes and afaik never really gets involved in debates. Has the red/orange car in his avatar.

I'm sure you've seen him around.

I orginally jumped in here to make a joke on how this would turn out, and the was sucked into the debate anyway. Slow boring day of work is when I usually fall victim. At home I have too many fun diversions to sit around and discuss these types of polarizing topics online heh.

"Green" is just a pretty word used in advertising to delude people into thinking their purchasing choices neutralize or lessen waste and damage to the ecosystem. About the only truly positive environmental impact civilization can make is to fertilize the planet with the corpses of several billion former consumers.

So that's how it is like genocide! Thanks for clearing that up.

I teach research methodology at the university. Let me clear this up.

Theory: A set of statements that summarizes and organizes existing information about some phenomenon, provides an explanation for the phenomenon, and serves a s basis for making predictions to be tested empirically.

Hypothesis: An educated guess about a relationship between variables that is then tested empirically.

You state a hypothesis when you are conducting an experiment. You say things like "I expect x to have higher scores than y" or "I predict that x and y will be positively correlated." There is a specific prediction made that states a direction. You then run the experiment and you either find support for your hypothesis or not. (Technically you're trying to reject the null hypothesis, but we won't get into that).

A theory is based on many of these empirical studies that each had a hypothesis. The theory needs to be consistent with all of the known empirical findings and be able to make sense of them all. Most importantly, a theory needs to be falsifiable and it is only accepted after repeated attempts to falsify the theory are unable to do so.

When someone says something like "it's just a theory", in layman's terms, that means it's just a random idea or opinion. A scientific theory is not "just a theory". In scientific terms, a theory means it is a well established idea that has multiple points of consistent evidence to back it up. I always want to pull my hair out when people dismissively say "evolution is just a theory" or "global warming is just a theory". It is a scientific theory, which means we have used our best epistemological tools to draw our conclusions. A scientific theory is not just simply some random idea or opinion, it is backed in testing and empiricism.

I'm surprised to see coherent thought on page 6 of this thread, since it was doomed by the end of the first page.

Note that I do not care at all about the environment or global warming. I just realized that I'd never heard this argument put forward in defense of used games.
CEX, a UK chain, is always pushing this angle. They like to call it "recycling" and pretend they're all goody goody, when really they're a glorified pawn shop with often (but not always) rude staff and shitty scratched up discs.

Wait. I'm a little lost. What line of thought lead to this statement? (The starting portion, I already know what lead to the latter portion.)
