Wow, I can't believe how bent out of shape people can get when you forget to explicitly mention that you're just expressing your opinion. Super Mario Land 2 was an excellent game, but IN MY OPINION this game is slightly better. IN MY OPINION, Super Mario 3D Land makes every level feel like it serves a purpose, and not a level passed by without showing another inventive way to use the handheld's 3D screen, without it feeling shoehorned or pointless. IN MY OPINION, the level design is more interesting and creative, making for a more enjoyable game (IN MY OPINION, that is).

Sonic The Hedgehog is best played on the GameCube with a Retrozone NES to Gamecube adapter and then using the PowerGlove.

Sonic on Powerglove. It's so bad.

You may consider it a step back, but I'm happy with what I got. I got a new Mario game that I can pick up and play for ten minutes and happens to be portable.
It's not bad, but as I said I was used to constant innovation from the Mario series (no 2 games felt exactly the same), and I never thought of the handheld games as Mario on the go, I thought of them as their own thing.

And since the recent games feel more like level packs instead of BRAND new experiences, and because I don't actually take my handhelds outside the house, so the "on the go" aspect isn't really a factor for me when I compare console and handheld games, I was just a bit disappointed. But yeah I'm super picky with my platformers anyway. It's just that I was hoping this would make me buy a 3DS, but it didn't :(. And I bought a Gamecube for Sunshine FFS

Oh come on lisalover. We were joking don't take it so seriously. Didn't you see all the  faces?

I don't care what the haters are saying, this is probably Mario's greatest handheld outing so far. It is FUN, something that is becoming a thing of the past. The level designs are great and is something I enjoy to look at with its sharp, colorful graphics. I beat the game and am aiming for 3 coins on every level before tackling the new levels unlocked. If there is a game to get, this is the one for 3ds. Seriously, Nintendo hasn't disappointed me and will keep churning out titles worth playing on the WiiU and 3ds.

 Even in Mario titles?

Again, isn't that in all Mario titles?

I think Swiftzx meant that about games developed by most non-Nintendo studios. To me, Super Mario 3D land looks like the most recent entry in a 2D gameplay revival that started back with Super Princess Peach or Wario Land: Shake It.

Nintendo has really been hammering out these simple, joyful, fun games whereas most companies have been trying to one-up each other in complicated game design, sometimes at the expense of the experience.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

@ZeroAX
I am not saying you have to like this game, but is trying this game out as a demo really enough time to form an opinion on this game to the extent you have?

And on another note please elaborate how super mario land 1 & 2 brought more innovation to the Mario series than SML 3DS. , or in general.

It didn't bring innovation to the series. But the games were unique compared to the other entries. Super Mario Land for its different gameplay, and SML2 for its different level design philosophy.

3D land just seemed like a scaled down Mario Galaxy. Nothing more.

Believe me, this is the first time a Mario game didn't manage to amaze me right away. Even NSMBWii I liked when I tried it for 5 mins.

Well I just got this and I am really enjoying it. It's making me eat my words for bashing the 3D effect in the past. Some of the levels really give you a sense of vertigo. There are some moments that also gave me a sense of wonder that I haven't felt about video games since I was a little kid, which is exactly how I want to feel when playing a Mario game.

The game is a little on the easy side, though some of the star coins have been a bit of a challenge to find and get to. That's a very minor complaint however because the game is very fun to play and just explore.

Too bad I don't have a Wii U or I would pick up 3D World out of principle, although the 3D graphics are a big part of what sells this title for me even if it's not really integral to the gameplay I do feel it adds to the enjoyment.
