B) A game being faster does not at all make the game suddenly favor impulsive actions and button-mashing. You can still have strategy involved - hell, you damn well better have a strategy if you hope to get anywhere, whether you're playing Turbo, Versus Series, Guilty Gear or anything else. Button-mashing and impulsive actions just lead to an early death, regardless of the game being played.

I'm not sure what you guys have been playing but Turbo is extremely strategic. I can understand the speed being overbearing, but I prefer it! If you button mash on that game in my house usually it will be a bad night for you. My old roommate could do scary things on that cart.

Add a "Preschool" section and put Pocket Fighter under it. In terms of fighting games, that's like learning your A,B,C's or 1,2,3's.

j/king.. To each his own and all; I completely respect all of your opinions with this - EVERY game has its strengths and weaknesses! 'CE is just the one I personally prefer.. That's all I wanted to say with that post, along with my reasons why.. There's absolutely NOTHING (technically) wrong with Turbo; I just never saw enough in my time with it to prefer it over Champion Edition..

Also, I realize there's plenty of strategy involved within the Turbo setting, don't get me wrong - I just feel its faster pace places more emphasis on reaction time than planning two or three steps ahead of your opponent. It's like playing chess, and then playing a 'Hyper' version of the game that implements a "5-seconds between moves" rule...

Pocket Fighter might be a good introduction to Marvel Super Heroes and the use of gems.

Pocket Fighter might also be a good introduction to the concept of chain combos as well.

Sadly, the people who really appreciate Pocket Fighter are those well versed in Capcom's fighting games AND those who are willing to play a fighter that isn't very deep or complex yet still fun. As I talk to more gamers, I find that those two things are almost always mutually exclusive.

True. I put in another vote for TURBO. Start training at the 0-star speeds and improve reaction time by working up. The wide selection is a boon and not a hindrance. Also, didn't CE have the same speed settings (though not as high of a ceiling)?

SF2 can teach walking, jumping, wall-jumping, hit-and-run, chain combos, 2-in-1's... But I would also suggest SF3:3rd or CVS2 or the like due to having a Training Mode AI that can block a failed combo. These games have a huge plethora of options available, especially CVS2. For training purposes, a teacher can lock their student in a limited custom groove until they "graduate" to learning more techniques.

Personally, I imagine CVS2 and MSHvSF/Pocket Fighter can represent the two extreme ends of the 2D spectrum. With the right grooves, CvS2 can be filled with tension. Move the slider to speed up the pace. But CvS doesn't reach "button-masher" potential, hence a VS-title.

For 3D games, I'd put in Soul Calibur II and Dead or Alive 2. Good middle-ground in terms of speed, and both can be very complex if need be.
