It was. Their drummer is excellent, and it was a good show. The guys looked like a bunch of pussies, though - especially the bassist. In fact, the things that bothered me about their appearance and stage behavior would prove to be the very things that bother me about their more later music... You know, with the over-emotion and the pretention and whatnot. It's always a sucky thing to see a band squandering its potential. That first album was pretty good...
@aaron: You've seen Botch, you bastard! I met one of their former members the day we opened for Blood Brothers. I think he was in These Arms Are Snakes, but I could be wrong...

Awesome. That first album was a highlight for me in whatever year it was released in. Absolutely loved the energy in the album. The later albums...totally different band. I thought Intimacy was ok though. "Halo" would have fit well in their debut.
Putting together a complete list of shows I have been to would be just about impossible as I have been to far many shows since my teenage years. And that isn't even including what must be thousands of local shows I have been to as well as shows my various bands have done over the years locally, regionally and nationally. But I guess here is a rough of the highlights of shows I have attended.
bands I have seen multiple times: -Sonic Youth ( I have seen them 17 times-no joke, including once with Wilco, once at Tibetan Freedom Festival and during the SYR/pre Thousand Leaves era at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center) -Mountain Goats (3x- Always great though I wasn't crazy with the full band tour for "Heretic Pride" I prefer the. John Darnielle/Peter Hughes guitar/bass/vocals line up live) -Yo La Tengo (3x- easily one of the best live bands I have ever seen) -Archers of Loaf (2x- AMAZING both times. Last time was with Knapsack, Vehicle Birth, At the Drive In just as "In Casino/Out" came out.) -Jon Spencer Blues Explosion! (4x. Best time was in late 96 at The Roxy w/ Atari Teenage Riot & Rudy "Dolemite" Ray Moore. Twice I saw them at a Festival Tibetan Freedom Festival and Siren Fest) -Versus (3x once with Superchunk and another with +/-.) -Seam (first time I saw them headlining @ Tramps and Jimmy Eat World was OPENING! Saw them a second time at a festival) -Built to Spill (2x. The first time I saw them someone yelled "play some Skynard" and they fucking played "Freebird" in its entirety almost on cue.) -The Flaming Lips (2x Both on "The Soft Bulletin" head phone tour. It was awesome seeing them in such a small venue. And they played my favorite Lips tune-"When You Smile") -Shellac (3x. Once at a festival, another with Blonde Redhead and then one more time with Bellini) -Blonde Redhead (3x. Once with Helium and Les Savy Fav and another with Quixotic and Crom Tech. This band is just not the same in the live format anymore.) -Les Savy Fav (4x once at Siren Fest, once w/ Helium & Blonde Redhead, another w/ The Ex and then the last time was them headlining playing with my buds Rahim) -Man or Astroman? (2x. Once at a small venue and another time at Siren Fest. REALLY fun live.) -Explosions in the Sky (3x. A fantastic experience every time. Though the last time the crowd was kind of annoying screaming during a lot of the songs quiet parts.) -Superchunk (3x. once at Siren Fest, another opening for Get Up Kids and another with Versus) -Sleater Kinney (2x once on the "All Hands on the Bad One" tour and another at Siren Fest 2)
bands I have only seen once: -The Jesus Lizard (just saw them on the reunion tour and were absolutely incredible. truly amazing how much these guys can still rock at their age. one of the best shows i have ever seen) -Sebadoh (on the "Harmacy" tour w/ Rex & Jon Davis of Folk Implosion) -Unwound (right around after "Challenge for a Civilized Society" & "A Single History" came out. Was supposed to seem them on the last tour but they canceled the rest of tour. bummer) -Mudhoney (on the "Since We've Become Translucent". I felt like I was 16 all over again. Singing along to the hits and they closed things out with their awesome version of Angry Samoans "Asshole") -Helium (on their last tour with Blonde Redhead and Les Savy Fav opening) -The Ex (Hands down one of the loudest, best bands I have ever seen live. w/ Les Savy Fav) -Buffalo Tom (INCREDIBLE live band. Joe Pernice of Scud Mountain Boys did a announced set to open) -Paul Westerberg ( I saw him on the "Mono" and "Stereo" tour and while he was awesome, it was too much of a greatest hits show, playing lots of Replacements tunes. At the time he just released two albums which were in constant rotation and I wanted to hear pretty much all of those songs. But still what a great songwriter and a great performer) -Angels of Light (it was one of the benefit shows for The Tonic venue in NYC (RIP) and M.Gira was touring with Akron/Family using them as his back up band. WOW. I never was able to see Swans live and seeing Angels of Light almost makes up for it. I would be hard pressed to find a singer/songwriter who can convey as much visceral raw emotion as Michael Gira. Beautiful yet absolutely crushing music at the same time.)
-REM (no matter how "indie" I may get REM will always be one of my favorite bands. I finally got to see them on I believe the "Up" tour and they were just great)
festivals: -The Last Show @ Princeton University w/ Shellac, Uzeda, Seam, US Maple, Don Caballero, Him (post June of 44), Paul Newman, Enemy Mine, Rye Coalition, Arab on Radar
-Rok Lok Records 10 Year Anniversary Fest ( A bit self indulgent as this was the festival to celebrate 10 years of doing my label. I got to see some of my favorite bands that I have done records for play and in some cases reunite and/travel to play. w/ On the might of Princes, Explosivo, The Solidarity Pact, Yes Sensei, Death Cycle, Loma Prieta, Damezumari, Space Robot Scientists, Marshall Teller, BRRR, and CMR.)
-Siren Fest (the first year- w/ Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Superchunk, Guided By Voices, Man or Astroman?, Rainer Maria, Enon, and Peeches)
-Tibetan Freedom Festival (two days in summer of 96 or 97. I can't recall. w/ Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, U2, Beastie Boys, Pavement, Blur, Bjork, Patti Smith, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Lee Perry, Taj Mahal, Michael Stipe & Mike Mills, KRS One, more.)

it was phenomenal. when they played "hutton's great heat engine" everyone in the crowd was screaming "it's so quiet here!" while dave just held his hands out. so amazing.
and yeah it was these arms are snakes, i think the bass player was in that band for a while. he is now in russian circles. dave verellen (the singer) is singing in narrows now, with rob from unbroken and some other dudes. dave knudsen is playing guitar in minus the bear, who rule, as i'm sure you know.

awesome. i saw mastodon and high on fire play a venue around the size of a garage, there were maybe 50 people there. it was excellent. this was right after remission came out.
i've also played with converge twice, seen them dozens of times. awesome band.

I guess I never did post a list. I haven't been to a ton of concerts, and even less now because most of the stuff I listen to aren't touring groups, or are foreign and don't come to Houston. In no particular order.
Duran Duran Information Society New Order KMDFM/Pig Mindless Self Indulgence Skinny Puppy - Godflesh opened and was pretty cool too Ministry Blaggards -several times, local band Foetus - best cover of I Am the Walrus at this show Blue Man Group - sorta counts Stomp - sorta counts Philip Glass - also listened to him talk the afternoon before the show, someone else asked him about working with Richard D James on Icct Hedral before I got a chance.
Went to a big rave a long time ago that had a few rooms and DJs. Either Armin Van Buuren or Paul Van Dyk spun for a while in the main room, but I can't remember who it was.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some concerts too, beyond a few other classical ones and a Kodo drum festival.

Very cool. Mastodon just blows my mind every time, especially their drummer. Now that they have some cash they have a really cool big screen with trippy videos going on behind them.
Converge surprises me every time. The way they open with "Plagues" and their lead singer goes ape shit. Their singer really knows how to get a crowd going, even if the venue has never heard a single song by them.

Use to go to a lot of concerts, hell I even fist bumped Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys around three years ago in Atlanta, but haven't been to a concert since Stadium Arcadium came out.
But, I've been to a lot of symphonies and Operas recently if they count.
