Exactly what Mr. Popo and Fast said.
It's also available on the PS1 as well.

It is Magic Carpet on steroids and speed. On the positive side you can buy many of the Descent games from Good Old Games preconfigured.
Huh, did not realize they had Descent on GoG. I might have to check that out. I remembe a while ago getting an issue of PC Gamer with a disc of 12 classic games. It had Descent, X-COM, Star Control 2, Terminal Velocity, Wing Commander, and several others that didn't make a big impression on me.

I picked 2 and 3 up in a bunch of old PC games - including most of the good Serria adventure games from the mid 90s. I was never very good at it back in the day, but I am going to give it another go next week. If I can get it to run on my EEE then I might play it at lunch instead of Open Arena - but that comes down to Wine and if I can get it to install very small.
But since I found it - Descent 3 Wii controls (if only):

Oh man, I forgot how much fun Descent was. I would highly recommend to anyone here that you get the Descent 1+2 pack off GOG and run them using the source ports here:

I call for System Shock and Deus Ex, and raise by System Shock 2. Also Alien Vs Predator 1 for a great fright-fest. I played the Gold version.
Also Shogun Total War, Serious Sam, Star Wars X-Wing Alliance and Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
...those are my favourites.

People keep talking about No one lives forever. I have seen it twice around here and it's sequel too and I wonder, should I pick it up? What makes that games so good? How long is it?

I hated first person shooters. I fiddled around with Doom, Wolfenstein 3d and maybe a duke nukem game and half-life but just couldn't get into it.
No One Lives Forever was the game that got me into the genre (along with Max Payne and Mafia). I think it's definitely worth a pickup. The second game is merely ok and only for those who loved the first one.
It's pretty funny. It's a spoof on the old Bond movies like the Austin Powers movies. The first game is pretty long. Maybe 20hrs to complete it although I don't really remember.
If you're into strategy...
I always liked Sim City and Age of Empires. Very old ones include Sim Ant and Castles II.
graphic adventure (point and click)
Blade Runner or Legend of Kyrandia Book 2 (I prefer the story in Book 1 but it has some very unforgiving game design ie: redundant screens and unwinnable scenarios, book 2 thankfully does not have all of these flaws)

shadobeni already summed things up. I will caution you, though. NOLF1 has a few annoying forced-stealth sections that "kill" you if you fail, requiring a reload. NOLF2 has one forced-stealth section, but you don't lose your progress if you get caught. It just sends you back to start.

Another warning- I picked up No One Lives Forever recently, but the installer won't work on a 64 bit Vista system.

I played NOLF about 2 years ago and at that time I felt the years did not go well with the game. Half through the game I wanted it to end quickly. I installed 2 once but my PC crashed, need to give it a shot.
