Old School PC games still worth playing?
I'm really in the mood to play some old PC games. I think things like Wolfenstein and Doom or Monkey Island have really dated badly in terms of gameplay. Any recommendations for things that are still great to play now?

I dunno -- I still like the original DOOM for some reason -- and it's not nostalgia. I didn't play it until I get a 32X like 8 years ago.
For something really classic, a lot of people like MULE

If your PC is old enough to run it properly then I'd recommend Mechwarrior 2. The visuals aren't the best (but they're still decent), but the gameplay has kept me enthralled since I first started playing it on my parents' 200 MHz Pentium.

If you think things like DOOM and Monkey Island aren't still great today, I don't know what to tell you. Except that you have no taste.

I would go to Valve's Steam website and sign up. Lucasarts has just released a good slew of their old point and click adventures for download for only $5 a pop. I just downloaded Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis and I am loving every minute of it.

If you like puzzles in an action type game, I think you'll like Lode Runner. You can get Lode Runner Online: Mad Monks Revenge for free by downloading it from the lead programer's website (Todd Daggert)

I grew up with Lode Runner for Apple II and Atari 800. It's a classic game. Some of the puzzles are very hard. If you ever finish the original set of levels, you can search for other levels created by fans.
Another favorite puzzle game is "Chip's Challenge". It was part of the Microsoft Entertainment Pack. For more info, see http://chips.kaseorg.com You can find the game on one of those abandonware sites.

Starcraft or Red Alert if you're in the mood for an RTS
Day of The Tentacle if you like point-and-click games, plus the game is hilarious and well-written.
Descent is always a good one, a great FPS multiplayer game
Abuse is a great, sidescroller shootemup. Tough but fun.
