I don't actually think that Divekick is a "good" game, but I think it's one of the funniest games I've ever played. As far as I can recall, it is the only game that has caused me to laugh so hard that I had tears running down. Seems like a perfect "party game," even for folks who never play games. So totally worth owning.BogusMeatFactory wrote: the only 2 button fighter you ever need.....DiveKick......'nuff said.

I agree, the game is fun and has a small level of strategy involved that it doesn't completely fade away immediately, but definitely a fun little party game to show people and see their reactions.noiseredux wrote:I don't actually think that Divekick is a "good" game, but I think it's one of the funniest games I've ever played. But I am saying that I think they are comparable, and I don't think we should necessarily make the distinction of format. While format does have to be taken into account when considering control schemes and styles, I don't think that a game in the arcade should be considered automatically superior to something that appeared on a handheld. Primal Rage had a legit arcade release, and I still think the game is shit(though coincidentally the handheld port is even worse in my opinion). Up to this point, I did think most handheld fighting games weren't ever up to par with their console or arcade counterparts, and I still think this is the case for many fighting game ports to machines like the Game Boy. But with the many quality ports and realizations of SNK series on the NGPC, I'm questioning my old opinion.noiseredux wrote:that's fine, and of course it's your opinion.Ack wrote: I find I would rather play MOTM than MvC2,
I'm just saying I don't even think they're comparable. If I'm in the mood for a legit arcade fighting game then MvC2 would win. If I'm in the mood for an awesome 2-button fighter w/ chibi-sprites that I can play in bed or on the back porch, then MotM would win.
If the question is which do you prefer: a legit arcade fighting game or an awesome 2-button fighter w/ chibi-sprites than you can play in bed or on the back porch, I'd be leaning towards the former.
Also, so what if they use a chibi art style? It works in the context of the game, just as it worked in Puzzle Fighter in the arcade. And so what if a two-button control scheme was used? Is Street Fighter superior to The King of Fighters because they use six versus four? Virtua Fighter uses only 3, the same number as World Heroes.
What happened, man? I used to think you were the king of handhelds.

Gals Fighters is still the best 2D fighting game without the words 'Smash Bros.' in the title

That's not what I'm saying at all. There are plenty of shit arcade games. There are plenty of great handheld fighting games. But when when I am in the mood for an arcade fighting game I don't think there's anything much better than 3rd Strike, MOTW or CvS2. And when I'm in the mood for games such as those three, I'm sorry I just don't feel satisfied by MotM.Ack wrote: But I am saying that I think they are comparable, and I don't think we should necessarily make the distinction of format. Again, you're missing my point. Also, so what if they use a chibi art style? It works in the context of the game, just as it worked in Puzzle Fighter in the arcade. I agree that the chibi art style works. I agree the 2-button configuration works. (The same way 6 works for SF and 4 works for KOF).
My point was simply that playing something like Garou via VGA w/ really nice speakers cranked up loud and an arcade stick is going to offer you a pretty different experience than playing a fighting game on NGPC isn't it? And sometimes you're in the mood for one experience over the other.
(PS, Fighting Vipers > Virtua Fighter)

Ah, ok, I see what you're getting at. Though I wish MotM had gotten a console release so it could be experienced in that way.

I don't think this makes it unfair to compare the games though. They're still two games in the same genre, there are still many elements between the two that can compared and contrasted. I don't like the mentaility of handheld games as being so different to console gaming that the two aren't comparable, even if you're someone who likes both and doesn't characterise one or another as inferior. It seems to perpetuate this weird idea some people have that handheld games aren't 'real' games likes home console or PC ones.
