While format does have to be taken into account when considering control schemes and styles, I don't think that a game in the arcade should be considered automatically superior to something that appeared on a handheld.
That's not what I'm saying at all. There are plenty of shit arcade games. There are plenty of great handheld fighting games. But when when I am in the mood for an arcade fighting game I don't think there's anything much better than 3rd Strike, MOTW or CvS2. And when I'm in the mood for games such as those three, I'm sorry I just don't feel satisfied by MotM.
Also, so what if they use a chibi art style? It works in the context of the game, just as it worked in Puzzle Fighter in the arcade. And so what if a two-button control scheme was used? Is Street Fighter superior to The King of Fighters because they use six versus four?
Again, you're missing my point.
I agree that the chibi art style works. I agree the 2-button configuration works. (The same way 6 works for SF and 4 works for KOF).
My point was simply that playing something like Garou via VGA w/ really nice speakers cranked up loud and an arcade stick is going to offer you a pretty different experience than playing a fighting game on NGPC isn't it? And sometimes you're in the mood for one experience over the other.
(PS, Fighting Vipers > Virtua Fighter)
