2nd game taken down, and it's not quite June. They were probably two of my quickest and easiest on the list though.

Pulseman is a fairly fun, but definitely flawed game. The mechanics of the game are solid, using the Volteccer to fly around and bounce about is a lot of fun, and being able to charge your attacks (particularly with the uber convenient forward dash) is handy. The level design is quirky and the cyberspace segments of each level are trippy and seizure inducing, full of bright flashing colours. Being able to choose between 3 levels most of the time was nice too. The game pulls of some impressive graphic distortion tricks with the Mega Drive hardware, and its obvious that Game Freak knew what they were doing with the system.

It's not all good though. The viewpoint of the game is FAR too zoomed in, and makes blind jumps an all too common occurence - you can see any platform that is more than one square below you, and there's not even a way too look down using the controller. Stage 6 of the game is literally one of the worst designed levels I've seen in the game, comprising of one VERY long drop down a corridor full of water and spikeballs. Dodging the spike balls is sheer luck and memorisation as it's impossible to see most of them whilst still having time to move out of their way. Enemies also patrol left and right at some points, and these literally require luck to dodge as there is no way to know where they are to safely manouvre around them. I lost about 25 lives throughout Pulseman, roughly 18 of which were on that one section. The other big flaw for me was the acceleration mechanics - move in one direction for a little bit and you'd accelerate to pretty fast speeds, but combined with the zoomed in viewpoint, it just makes it so you run into enemies to easily. I deliberately stopped and walked most places. It's impossible to attack whilst move (except with the volteccer hich launches you into the air) and jumping whilst running launches you forward with no ability to turn your jump backwards if you'd otherwise hit something dangerous.

The final level deserves a mention. It takes place in an arcade machine and the level graphics were very 8 bit. Weird to see the 8 bit style in a 16 bit game, it kinda reminded me of a lot of modern indie stuff. After playing through 4 levels of this auto-scrolling space run n gun arcade machine you fight a boss straight out of gradius, before a slightly more convention trip through the lasdt part of the level to the real boss. I found that several bosses would be made an absolute joke using the Up + B jump attack which left pulseman invulnerable not only for the duration of the jump, but for just long enough after it to do it again, making it ultra spammable. I got to the final boss with 1 hit left on my current life and beat him first go by doing this. Its kinda sad as the bosses are really quite challenging otherwise.

Overall, its a good polished game with lots of style, but some design flaws let it down.

And with that, 2/11 are taken down from my list. Next up: I dunno, probably Metroid Prime 3. I might try to work through some Bubble Bobble or Cybernator whilst I'm at it though.

Over Dragon Quest or Phantasy Star? :D

I have to say I really agree with the speed up thing. Sometimes I would have mini panic attacks while playing Pulseman, because I was never quite sure when the super-fast running would kick in.

I just-- I don't understand how you didn't have any trouble with the part with all the asteroids flying around in Stage 7. I probably only died two or three times in the spiked-mine tube in Stage 6, but that damn asteroid field keeps me awake at night. I'm pretty sure you can swim a bit underwater, though. Maybe that was the issue you were having?

You can swim? How!?

As for the asteroids section there's a volteccer power power-up early on. Any time asteroids or spaceships came flying at me I'd just tap volteccer, bash through them and then tap it again to come out of it. Would barely move, but would give me enough invincibility for the danger to pass (you're invincible during the animation where you turn into a ball and come out of it too, aswell as the actual duration of the attack).

I may have misspoken. I checked a couple videos to refresh my memory, and I might be mistaken. I don't know. I didn't have much trouble with that section, though. I'm sure it would've been the jump button if there were any type of swimming to be had.

Yeah, I always got the power-up, but I might have just been over committing to shooting the disc things / asteroids down. Those, plus the pits, I could never get a foothold in that section. Lost something like 30 lives in that one spot.

Ys 3 is going very well.

I feel pretty overpowered though, even bosses fall to me pretty much effortlessly now.

I'm level 10, just entering Mt. Seko.

Also, this game is addicting.

put in like 2 hrs of FF tonight. Beat the volcano and got thru the ice dungeon. PSP is totally the way to play FF. I'm thinking when I finally play thru II, III and IV in their entirety, it'll be this way.

Also, still struggling with that first boss level of Doom. Ugh.

I'm gonna cheat and call EspGaluda good. Beat the last boss on a credit, but died out again on the TLB. I actually cleared the 5th boss with 3 lives, by far the best i've ever done, in fact got through the first 4 stages w/nay a hit. I usually get through 1-3 unscathed, but very rarely stage 4.

At any rate, was feeling really good after beating the stage 5 boss, then brief intermission before the run-up to the TLB, lost 2 lives on the darned pixies - they are tough, but I usually navigate them just fine. Then, did well on the TLB and got to his last form, using my bomb/shield to exhaustion, but just couldn't pull through. I immediately fired it back up and played another run, took a credit and a half (2 lives on 2nd credit) to get through it. Not my ideal and I may come back to it, but i've sunk 12 hours into this the past 2 weeks and time to get at something else for a bit.

Here's the shot from my first run of the night where I was about 10% of the TLB away from the ALL :/

be proud Mike. A 1CC is nothing to sneeze at. Just making it thru most CAVE games on less than "a dollar" is awesome. Besides, 'beating' the game is totally different than when we play for score. And I'm sure you're far better at that than anyone on this site with Galuda right now. :slowclap:

Which version - SNES, Genesis, Turbo CD, PS2?

There is a level cap in Ys games - things will get tough.
