Ultima Online - Not the first graphical MMO, but the first to do it right, and still be alive today. Meridian 59 would have taken this, but it was gone for a few years, but back now thanks to open source.

Depending how you feel about graphics, the Mac port of Wolfenstein3D was a far prettier release than the DOS version. I'm surprised it never with all the patching and remakes over the years doing stuff under the table after that source went open they didn't convert that.

I will throw that vote for pre-Halo Marathon too on there, mind you it got a PC release for free maybe 10 years back now.

The Wolf 3D "Mac family" ports make some strange concessions such as removing the side and rear sprites for the enemies so you can no longer sneak up on them from behind and they just oddly crabwalk all over the place. That's the primary reason nobody ever replaced the sprites, because they're not finished.

Hmm pretty box art hiding a glaring flaw like many DOOM console ports do with the lack of the 8 views. Shameful, but even today someone with decent skill could draw the rest I suppose and finish up what they didn't.

I mean, if you have to pick one, Doom would probably be the most important.

I would argue from a historical perspective that Quake was actually more important than Doom, for three reasons:

1. The jump to full polygonal 3D
2. 3D acceleration cards for consumer PCs
3. QuakeWorld

But just for my favorites...

Half-Life
System Shock 2
Unreal Tournament

Story-telling with a silent protagonist, role-playing elements integrated into an FPS, and a popular game with no single player story mode. Multiplayer only, bots or humans!

I would say Lost Crystal is fairly important, since it was the first World Builder game of the 90s. World Builder was like the Adventure Construction Set for Point and Clicks on MacOS, similar to MacVenture. Lost Crystal took alot of notes from earlier titles like Radical Castles and Enchanted Scepters, aswell as MacVenture titles, and many people who worked on these titles eventually made Myst.

Edit:
Or you Pathways into Darkness. Bungie before Marathon/Halo

Edit 2:
Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Bungies first multiplayer game and the one that spearheaded realtime multiplayer over appletalk with "random" maps. Pretty much the birth of online multiplayer for OS7. Sure Bolo did it in 87, but Bolo was developed for BBC Micro and had fairly fixed battlefields - another PC that needs to be added to the list.
Wouldn't Gnip Gnop technically be Bungie's first multiplayer title? Or am I confused in my tiredness?

Something like that; There's a lot that I haven't played for way too long.
That's a good list! Most of my favourites from 90's are in it! I'd say the best one for me is Monkey Island 2...

When I think of 90s games, two things come to mind. EGA-VGA Polygons and complicated Keyboard controls adding to the game atmosphere.

Sentinel Returns maybe not the best, but definitely a unique different game. There are 90's games that have a lost style of game play yet to be coded again on modern platforms. Galapagos is another bizarre game available on the PC and Mac.

Posted a Thread on Sentinel with download links to run on a modern PC. Oooh, just discovered another Freeware version! Updated the Sentinel Game Thread.

Galapagos: Mendel's Escape
An early take on "Virtua Pet". You don't have to feed it, but guide its AI into doing tasks, exploring the world and escaping. You control the environment to make Mendel react to it.

Jet Fighter II and TFX
The DOS games along with Microsoft Flight Simulator really opened up flying on a PC. Jet Fighter II and TFX had great camera controls rolling around the airplane and landscape.

TFX
TFX has a very neat target view mode yet to be coded in modern Flight Sims. View target, bank towards target rolls to front view, level out plane and the view rolls back to the target. You can even switch to missile view just like the Iraq war briefings. Oh and Stormin' Norman briefs you in the game.
