Oh, I have one of those Coleco handhelds. The game choice is a little odd, (Alex Kidd in High Tech World, seriously)? But it did introduce me to a few games I might not have tried otherwise; Kung Fu Kid in particular is quite fun and a game I do not have in my SMS collection.
... Also, the Battery life is phenomenal! I think I got a few years on one set of 3 AAA batteries (very casual and infrequent use, but still). I wish I was tech savvy enough to customize the rom list, as that would make it a good portable.

At present, I use a GBA SP with a GBA Movie Player to play a light selection of SMS games. Beyond Columns and Woody Pop, it doesn't really play any GG games though. I think my SuperCard or EZ flash IV would, but I somehow enjoy working with the limitations of my movie player. And there's always PSP and DS too.
But I really ought to get my Gears back into shape (most of mine were project systems). And I have an everdrive that I haven't even touched yet. Got a shell all ready for it and everything. Just haven't felt the need just yet.

So yeah, a fan, just been taking a hiatus.

As for Game Gears and battery life, doing an LED mod to replace the lighting adds at least a few hours of gameplay (doubles it in my experience, around 13+ hours total on one set of alkalines, but I have yet to test on NiMH). I'm not doing the mods right now, but may offer again in the future. It's totally doable for the common gamer though (if a soldering iron doesn't strike fear in your heart). I still want to post a guide from my own twist on the project sometime.
I like to use 4-LEDs (2 on each side). I'd link my old sales thread for it, but it's such a mess, I'd like to keep it buried for now ;)
...just another lost soul...

Yeah, wow didn't know Coleco was into that sort of thing. It's even titled the "Coleco Sonic"
I wouldn't exactly count on that. Consider that the Atari name brand has been bought, sold, and licensed ad infinitum. Coleco may be in a similar situation. It's less a company nowadays, and more a brand name. If "Xhai-ho holdings ltd." wanted to slap the Coleco brand on a product, they could just pay a licensing fee.

thanks to prfsnl, I'm getting my couch football on. It's actually quite timely, as I've been reading Console Wars (which is partly why I was feeling nostalgic for my GG in the first place), and they discuss Joe Montana Football early on. I'm sure this is really common knowledge now, but I didn't really realize it until I read it in the book. Apparently Sega wanted to make a new football game that would really sell - they were able to get the Joe Montana license, but didn't have enough time to develop a proper game. So they made a deal with EA to just re-skin the latest Madden game into this Joe Montana game. All those years, I had no idea.

That's a fantastic book. I, also, didn't know that until I read that book.

That's an interesting note I hadn't heard before. I misremembered the opposite - they had the engine built but needed a name (this may have been the Reggie Jackson story). Certainly not a console Madden - doesn't play like any of those.

I played too much Joe Montana Football on the Game Gear growing up. The AI / skill for each city is the same and there are so many things lacking - no big plays for one (no broken tackles, very rudimentary).

I agree. And I don't know all the details. I *think* that the Madden thing is not specific to GG though. The GG game is prob its own thing, but the console Montana was a re-skinned Madden.

Anyway, yes, Montana on GG is very basic. And you basically can't run the ball. But it's fun. Kind of has a more arcade, less sim feel to it.

Someone buy this white Game Gear and i'll re cap it for free!

It's only at $267 atm.
White Game Gears were also released, however these were not sold in stores. Only 10,000 were manufactured and were only given to developers or those directly associated with Sega. White Game Gears came with their own white TV tuners and case.

Has anyone used the Master Gear Converter? If so, how do you like it? I was curious how it handled the difference in screen resolution, so I found this explanation at SMS Power. Pretty interesting!

Also, the Racketboy Game Gear and Master System guides are nearly a decade old. The games haven't changed, but the prices certainly might have! What would it take to get those updated/expanded? Mainly, I'm interested in knowing what GG/MS exclusives are worth tracking down, and that won't cost an arm and a leg.
My games for sale: Racketboy, Amazon, eBay
My systems: NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube (Game Boy Player), Wii / Game & Watch: Ball, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP (x2), Nintendo DSi / Genesis (Sega CD, 32X), Saturn / Game Gear / PlayStation, PlayStation 2 / Xbox / Mac (Windows PC) / iPhone, iPad
