What does the term "shooter" mean to you at first glance?

Which only proves that even on a site that caters to retro gaming, community members themselves do not automatically have a bias to one definition or the other concerning the "shooter" term itself. Thus the disambiguation is called for.MrPopo wrote:Conversely, going into a forum called Shooters is probably going to make a person expect either Shmups or FPS/TPS
That being said, of the 26 votes thus far, only 5 claim to immediately think of shoot 'em ups as what "shooter" means by immediate default. I think that says something about this community not being as ostensibly old fashioned as certain members tend to imagine it is.

So the take away is you used the word "shooter" and caused all the problems.Exhuminator wrote:Which only proves that even on a site that caters to retro gaming, community members themselves do not automatically have a bias to one definition or the other concerning the "shooter" term itself. No, because we're not sure if the joke is the name or the product itself.dsheinem wrote:did anyone make this joke yet?

Possibly. Or it could be one cannot assume if someone says shooter they actually mean arcade shmup, even on a retrogaming forum such as this fine establishment. :pMrPopo wrote:So the take away is you used the word "shooter" and caused all the problems.

There's a show called a blow job as well. I believe it is more or less the same color. Likewise there's one called a buttery nipple. I will say that I was using the term shooter to refer to 2D spaceship games before Wolf3D was on the scene. Cause y'all have FORCED me to go all old guy/hipster on yer asses.
And I STILL don't understand how a term meaning "shoot 'em up" refers to 2D spaceship games. I just don't. I hear "shoot 'em up" and imagine a bunch of bandits in the wild west shooting up a bar. I will accept "vert" and "hori", though...
