Which only proves that even on a site that caters to retro gaming, community members themselves do not automatically have a bias to one definition or the other concerning the "shooter" term itself. Thus the disambiguation is called for.

That being said, of the 26 votes thus far, only 5 claim to immediately think of shoot 'em ups as what "shooter" means by immediate default. I think that says something about this community not being as ostensibly old fashioned as certain members tend to imagine it is.

No, because we're not sure if the joke is the name or the product itself.

Possibly. Or it could be one cannot assume if someone says shooter they actually mean arcade shmup, even on a retrogaming forum such as this fine establishment. :p

There's a show called a blow job as well. I believe it is more or less the same color. Likewise there's one called a buttery nipple. Blame bartenders with the mentality of 14 year olds.

I will say that I was using the term shooter to refer to 2D spaceship games before Wolf3D was on the scene. Cause y'all have FORCED me to go all old guy/hipster on yer asses.

And I STILL don't understand how a term meaning "shoot 'em up" refers to 2D spaceship games. I just don't. I hear "shoot 'em up" and imagine a bunch of bandits in the wild west shooting up a bar. I will accept "vert" and "hori", though...

Now get off my lawn! *shakes cane in the air*
