Well even if we remove Shining from that list for this caveat, it is still a list of 15+ IPs that were from the DC era or earlier that have had good entries in the years since.

And you suck for not liking Monkey Ball.
I can usually fimd redeeming qualities or enjoyment from most any game. And I despised my time playing monkey ball.

The premis of it is stupid to begin with, and then add crappy mini games of monkeys inside of balls.
When your newborn child is of age, they can expect a shipment of Monkey Ball games.

Besides, the mini games are arguably the best part. How anyone can dislike those games is beyond me.

Gonna call bullshit on this one. In the decade since DC games stopped being made, Sega has had a better good/bad ratio than people give them credit for. Metacritic, which tracks most games released since 2002 or so, agrees, giving Sega (as a publisher) 246 positive to 47 negative and 311 mixed (http://www.metacritic.com/company/sega). Granted, Metacritic is not an end-all be-all measure, but it isn't a horrible one for something like this. Looking at that list, I can easily find 5-10 games made and/or published by Sega that I have enjoyed every year since the DC ended.

I think what people get upset about is how they have sometimes fucked up or ignored old IPs (e.g. the Golden Axe reboot, many many bad Sonic games until about 2009 or so, no new Shenmue, etc.). But really, those are the exceptions.

Since the DC ended we have had very good to excellent Sonic, Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star, Virtua Fighter, Daytona, After Burner, House of the Dead, Samba de Amigo, Shining, Out Run, 2K, Jet Radio, Sega GT, Sega Rally, Shinobi, Virtua Tennis, and Space Channel games. They've also done a tremendous job of porting old Genesis, SMS, and DC games to both disc and online services for newer consoles.

In addition - and this is something their old competitor Nintendo can't claim - Sega has introduced many great NEW IPs in the past decade. Super Monkey Ball, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, Initial D, Condemned, Infinite Space, Otogi, Bayonetta, The Conduit, Binary Domain, Vanquish, Crush, The Cave, and more I am forgetting.

So yeah, don't look at the Were-hog or an occasional lame sequel and claim that the company has more bad games than good since the end of the DC. Because it is bullshit.
this is just about the smartest post on this particular topic i've ever read.

i never understood why gamers seem to bemoan sega for failing at updating games featuring their classic mascot, while simultaneously bemoaning nintendo for succeeding at it.

have any of you assholes PLAYED vanquish?! mother of god, it's so great. easily one of my favorite games of this generation.

A handful of 'decent - good' b sega games dosnen't make up up for the fact that put out garbage where it counted on what should have been their biggest titles. You can't f up sonic. You can't f up NiGHTS. You can't f up golden axe. You just can't. Could you imagine if nintendo came out with a mario game as bad as some of the sonics that have came out? Look how bad super mario sunshine got bashed and that wasn't even a bad game! It just wasn't up to par to what nintendo always puts out! People hold the same standards for Sega because of past quality which honestly we probably shouldn't anymore. Same name different company.

Someone said above about waiting on the next shenmue game. Hell i'm still waiting on my DC shenmue 2. You know the one the rest of world got but if we in NA wanted it we would either have to import or buy an xbox? Yeah i don't hold grudges lol

Dave raises a good point. I've found that most of Sega's published 3rd party games have been really fun. They might not have the same level of polish as Nintendo 1st party games, but I haven't been disappointed by any of them. It's when they've done their own development that it feels like it falls flat. Plus, I'd really just wish they'd get together with Camelot and have them make some Shining Force games again.

I should be quick to point out Dysfuntion is a Sega Company Staple. Ever since the Saturn days when Bernie Stolar wouldn't let anything good come out. There's also the "losing" of the Panzer Dragoon Saga source code. Then you have the actual failure of the Dreamcast which was doing WELL when the plug was pulled.

And a bunch of other things I can't even remember now.

I'll admit that as I get further into it, Anarchy Reigns is pretty Mediocre. I'm not sure what attributed to that, though. I can't put my finger right on it. Maybe in development too long, and was rushed to release?

However, like Dave so eloquently put, Sega has had a handful of excellent games past the Dreamcast Era. So many of those came out on all three consoles. I can't believe I almost missed out on a lot of excellent games that came out through Sega.

What hasn't been mentioned:
-2K Sport Series: Underrated and able to compete against the EA Sports brand.
-Spartan Total Warrior / Total War Series
-Football Manager!
-Billy Hatcher
-Multiplatform Releases: SEGA is the only video game company that I know of that actively produces games for iOS/Android, which might be an expanding, if casual, market. I don't see Nintendo, or Sony producing 1st party software for tablets and smart phones. I'm wondering if this is paying off.

Of course, there's a few bumps in the road. Phantasy Star Universe did not meet expectations that were set from it's predecessor. Sonic hit rock bottom in 2006. I think a lot of that culpability lies with the leadership dynamics in the corporation in both Japan and the Americas.

I'm not sure anyone was disputing Sega as a publisher of third party titles, but rather, to quote MulishaSoldier929, to whom dsheinem directly responded, "Sega made games." What's the ratio when you leave out third party titles?

I find it silly that people seem to think that they need to "make up" for something.

They're a company. If they make something good, give them your money. If they make something bad, don't buy it.

There's nothing to "make up" for. They don't owe you anything.

"able to compete"? Pfft. NBA 2K series blows away anything EA tried to do for basketball.

Yeah in recent years nba 2k has been a great series and shut down long standing nba live. That is about their only success story in sports lately. Nhl was shut down and mlb tanked.
