Zero is pretty awesome too. Not one everybody loves, but I think it's great and would put it above Code Veronica.
REmake is DAMN good. Highly recommend it. But I think Metroid: Zero Mission takes the spot for best remake ever.

No way Zero is better than Code Veronica, though. The weird bug creatures were just that, weird. Not scary or cool.

It's funny I always think of Zero Mission too there, both are some of the best remakes by far.

I dunno about Veronica though, just wasn't much of a fan. The visuals are super dated since it was more 3D with the technology then, so I don't think it even looks as good as the original three on the PSX. The setting was kind of whatever and there was a huge amount of backtracking with Chris. It did have some of the hardest puzzles in the series though I thought. Not bad but not my favorite.

Maybe I missed it but no mention to the Dead Space series. The first and second game were pretty survival horror to me. Yeah it had closet scares but when they attack you from behind without the a noise from them. Music would bump up when they appear in the room and the devs thought it was a good idea to kill the lights until everything was dead. Another thing: stay away from the vents.

I just finished RE:Darkside Chronicles on the Wii and, though definitely not a survival horror game, I found it to be quite enjoyable. It basically runs through Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica in the light gun genre, and I found interacting with the environments and seeing the condensed versions of the games pretty neat. Playing without a zapper though is definitely NOT recommended - holding the Wiimote to shoot is absolute hell on your wrists.

Well, started playing Revelations last night and the game is pretty fun so far. I wouldn't exactly call it scary just yet, but the atmosphere is better than most of the current generation's horror games (definitely not better than Dead Space though). The controls are fine, though running doesn't really feel like running, and there is some awkward stiffness when performing some actions. The graphics are definitely nothing to write home about.

I do have a gripe though, and that's with the first boss, the Communications Officer. This fight is total bullshit. This guy kills you with one hit and has an obscene amount of life. Not only that, but there is an infinite number of zombies that pour into the boss area - seriously, when you kill one, it respawns seconds later. Not only that, but this fight generally lasts between 8 and 10 minutes long, so essentially, if you fuck up one time and get hit by this guy, you have to start the fight all over again (with limited ammo and the infinite enemies). Needless to say, I'm taking a break from it.

I beat Revelations about a week ago and, while it's a far better game than RE6, it wasn't exactly the second coming of survival horror. It's definitely a decent game but one that disappoints if you're looking for a good scare. In other news, I'm playing Dead Space 2 at the moment and the atmosphere (pun intended) is amazing. It's an extremely stressful environment and the game does a great job making you feel uncomfortable and anxious, especially in rooms where the only light you can see by are blood-soaked candles and a shaky flashlight beam. The enemies are great and I've jumped and yelled a few times already and I'm not even halfway through the game. If survival horror is at all alive and kicking, I think Dead Space is one of the best bets for it to continue.

Based on this, I can safely assume you haven't played Dead Space 3 then, which effectively dropped the horror elements to become a more generic third-person shooter. That said, we still have both Dead Space and Dead Space 2.

Why are you breaking my heart, Ack? I have DS3 sitting on top of my 360 as speak and had every intention of playing it after I beat DS2! I really hope it isn't as bad as you say, the first two games in the series are fantastic...

I really enjoyed Dead Space 1 & 2 but after hearing quite a bit of negativity about it I ended up skipping it. It's unlikely I'll try it anytime soon.

Well, I beat Dead Space 2 tonight and was very impressed - what a great game. I like the atmosphere of the first game a bit better, but DS2 delivers as well.

I started Dead Space 3 tonight...and I'm already not feeling it. Not only does the game somehow manage to look much worse than Dead Space 1 and 2, but it doesn't feel like a Dead Space game at all, even when you're finally in space. The characters look like they belong in a PS2 game, Isacc is slow and the enemies are very fast, and the weapons seem underpowered compared to the last two games. I don't know about this one. I'll finish it and hopefully my opinion of the game goes up, but I can see why there's some negativity surrounding this one.
