I'm still kinda crappy at boarding.

Once you figure out how to properly use transporters plus mantises you pretty much break the game and make the final boss a joke.

Don't bother with any other boarding party, get mantises. Rocks are okay if you have fire weapons since they're fireproof. That can get pretty awesome.

That said a lot of your success and failure in normal mode comes down to blind luck, though you still feel like Captain Badass when you pull a victory from the clutches of certain defeat.

Pretty much this. Killing a ship through boarding is at least a 50% increase in the material gains, which means your ship gets better faster, so you take less damage and have more of your increased scrap to spend on weapons.

So I got this in the Humble Bundle and tried it out yesterday, I absolutely LOVE this game. Seems like it's going to cut into my studying a lot.

Like this game is just brilliant, it really is a game to me, which oddly enough is a novelty in today's video game world. It's like a way more interactive Oregon trail, really just awesome.

I've been playing nothing but normal mode and learning the ropes, but yeah, it is luck based which kinda sucks, but at the same time it doesn't feel like a big deal to start over even if you did really well. It gives a really grand sense of adventure considering there is no story, and being sublime is never an easy thing.

I got around to finally getting a teleporter and coincidentally used two mantis' myself. No surprise that other people here see that as such a powerful tactic, all that money, don't have to use missiles.

Too bad the only time I used it I used it on an auto pilot ship, so there was no oxygen in the room I tp'd them too. Rookie mistake.

I had to make do with a Rock guy + Mantis combo, which was still plenty efficient.

Furthest I've got was Sector 6 2 or 3 times. I've been trying out some new stuff so I've been dying somewhat early lately.

Yeah for me! :p
Growing from a total FTL noob to a veteran player, dying in every possible way and from countless mistakes: Finally finished FTL on normal (with the Basilisk).
After unlocking every ship on Easy, I managed to beat this game at last.

It had cost me around 80-90 hours though :D

Now the waiting has commenced for the free expansion! (Meanwhile beating the game several times of course)

Saw about the update yesterday and I am stoked.

I bought the Kestrel and Pirate T-shirts for my girlfriend for Christmas, we both love FTL and just a little while ago I was hoping we would get some kind of update soon.

Looking forward to unlocking the new ship layouts and trying out the new weapon and system builds.

I've got two ships left to unlock: the C layouts of the Slug and Mantis ships. The game makes unlocking the Crystal ship much easier; the C layout of the Rock ship comes with a Crystal crew member, and that's the only requirement to trigger the beacon in the Rock Homeworld.

Well my 15 minute break from studying turned into a full playthrough. lol
Once you get a good game going you have to see how far you get.

I actually finished the game on Normal difficulty (first time for me).
I had two burst laser 2's on the ship with the automatic beam weapon (which I had the cooldown time maxed out on). Full shields, engine at 3/4, and a max crew.

I pretty much steamrolled the flagship until the end. It started to do some real damage at the final battle phase.

So yeah, a great run. Doesn't usually happen though.
