Ya that's what a theory is lol. They then try to back up those theories with experiments and suggestive evidence. The science is in interpreting and analyzing the data and trying to come up with the best conclusion. Many a scientists disagree in the same sets of data all the time. The data is clear, what it means always isn't. I am not a scientist, but an engineer, so I have some level of appreciation for what goes on heh.

I'm not really referring to that graph, but the pull it out of their asses comment, which is sometimes what they do.
I think you're confusing "theory" with "hypothesis" here.
Semantics... but they can be interchanged... theory is a synonym of hypothesis

We're talking science here. "Theory" has a pretty specific meaning in the context of science and is very much not just a synonym for hypothesis.

I'm only bringing it up because I really, really hate seeing the phrase "only a theory" thrown around when talking about scientific stuff.

My hypothesis is that your statement is just a theory.

Again semantics, you knew what I was trying to portray and in the context I used the word theory: as a conjecture, idea, or notion. These arguments serve little purpose...

If I want to be more specific, yes that would be hypothesis where a scientific theory is a hypothesis that is supported by scientific experiments and data.

In the end, they are still unproven. Many are just popular theories, and many of them go in and out of popularity as different analysis and studies are done. They are suggestive and supported, and sometimes proven or disproven.

Wrote a huge post about global warming, the Occupy movement, religion, dinosaurs, Al Gore, GameStop, the U.S. military, and other things and then thought "man Bone do you really have the energy to argue about shit like this right now in a retro gaming forum? Especially when your wife expects you to have sloppy joes made in 20 minutes?"

Damn that Tom Cruise pic is creepy.
