Gamespot gives Skyward Sword 7.5/10
Re: Gamespot gives Skyward Sword 7.5/10
Honestly, that's fine. It's their opinion. I remember I was super pissed when they gave Twilight Princess an 8.8. After I played the game I was surprised, because I personally would have given it a much lower score. I'm really not excited for Skyward Sword. I wouldn't be buying it if my girlfriend wasn't super hyped for it. For me, I'm guessing that 7.5 will be pretty accurate.
The game isn't even out yet though. If you want to read positive reviews it has gotten quite a few "perfect scores." Maybe read those?

Skyward Sword is only the 16th game to get a 10/10 from Famitsu!Inazuma wrote:I haven't played Skyward Sword but I know that I will love it, so that's good enough for me. Reviews are nice but since everyone has different interests when it comes to games, you can't always trust them 100%. The typical American casual gamer Call of Duty player would probably dislike Skyward Sword.
I heard that Famitsu gave Skyward Sword a perfect score of 40/40. Since I tend to think about games like most Japanese people, this review is more valuable to me.
I also hate the 5 to 10 rating scale that most big gaming sites use. 5 is supposed to be the score you give to an average game, not 7. Giving almost every game a rating of 7 or 8 screams dishonest to me. They don't actually care about giving a good review. They just don't want to lose their advertisers or upset any publishers. That's why I don't read sites like Gamespot or IGN.
I actually prefer review sites where no numerical score is given. Hardcore Gaming 101, for example, has extensive write-ups and you're actually forced to read the whole thing instead of skimming looking for a number.
Retro games would be pretty much impossible to score anyway. Take Pong, for example. I could give it a 10/10 based on innovation and influence, but just as easily give it a 2/10 as it wears thin very quickly.
It's much harder to assign a score to video games compared to other artforms (like movies or music) as the medium has changed so much over the past couple of decades.
Now I'm rambling haha.

The reason I was upset by GS's score wasn't so much that they gave it a lower score than most other sites, it's the reasoning they used to justify the score. Seriously, complaining about it using the familiar Zelda formula? As long as Nintendo does a really good job making sure it's fun, what does it matter if the formula isn't groundbreaking? They didn't give Black Ops a low score for using the same old COD gameplay! And complaining about the sword controls being too abstracted is lame too, IMO. It's Wii, for goodness sakes. The motion controls aren't going to be perfect 1:1. I though everyone figured that out within a few months of launch.

Although I'm far from professional, when I post reviews you'll notice I don't post a review score anywhere.
I feel review scores are completely meaningless. You either like a game or you don't. You either recommend it or you don't. To diehard Zelda games, this one will be the best ever. For those who don't like Zelda or Wii motion controls it will score lower.
The guy who posted a few pages back about how awful Skyrim is a perfect example. He gave his points on how he hasn't liked anything Bevesta has done in recent years so while I wholeheartedly disagree with him, I respect what he says because it wasn't down to "SKYRIM is 2/10".
We really need to stop paying so much attention to review scores. All they mean is one person's opinion, which of course may or may not line up with your opinion. the review content is what matters, not a scoring.

You gotta realize that game review sites cater to the "brogamers". Your typical COD player isnt going to run out Sunday morning and buy this game cause of two reasons. 1. Its on the Wii. 2. It isnt a HD game. This is why (IMO) this game got scored the way it did. They wanted to keep those "brogamers" coming back to the site saying Skyrim and COD are the best games this year.BoringSupreez wrote:The reason I was upset by GS's score wasn't so much that they gave it a lower score than most other sites, it's the reasoning they used to justify the score. To dock points for a Zelda game being true to its formula is ridiculous. This is another example of reviewer bias. COD games have played the same for the past 5 games. Every Zelda game since the original had different play styles but same formula (except for Zelda 2). I never felt like one Zelda game was a complete rip off of the last but what are you gonna do. People will be flocking to this website for weeks now because of this score. Bad publicity is better than no publicity.

Well, the game isn't out so it cannot be known whether those points are valid. I for one am tired to the point of exhaustion with the Zelda formula. It is unfun for me now. Going to wait a long while before I play this one. Some people just don't like the things you like. Based on the Metacritic score, this is an extreme minority. Why complain? Just play a game or something.

I read Nintendo Power every month since it has the coverage I'm looking for including retro. Anyway, I really like the way they review DSiware, Wiiware, and virtual console games. Instead of a score they use a recommend, ok but not for everyone, or a not recommended (don't remember exact words) and than write why. Maybe its a good game but overpriced, maybe Its good for a certain genre game, or maybe its just really bad. I can read it and it makes sense.
I wish they did it for new releases as well but they're not afraid to use the entire 1-10 scale and It'd be nice if all reviews/magazines were like this. They seem mostly impartial.

Bad example. Nintendo reviewing their own games? Of course there is bias.jmbarnes101 wrote:I read Nintendo Power every month since it has the coverage I'm looking for including retro. The game is about as far away from a 'zelda formula' as you can probably get. Yes the same old tropes apply but the way the game goes about introducing them is completely novel. It's actually refreshing to go "oh, it's this puzzle again" but your instinct is completely wrong. Almost like it's teasing long time Zelda fans with these puzzles that have been completely reinvented. The game just completely surprises you at every single turn.equalsign wrote:Well, the game isn't out so it cannot be known whether those points are valid. Anybody complaining about the controls just haven't got used to it. You seriously can't just waggle and hope in this game. You need to use measured controlled movements in order to be successful. Nothing makes this more clear until you face the first proper boss. Just spamming actions gets you nowhere. You actually have to think about where you're pointing your sword and how you're going to strike in order to win. The combat actually reminds me of Dark Souls in the way that you have to size your opponents up and think about which way you're going to strike your sword. The game WILL punish you for spamming attacks on all but the most basic of enemies.
Even the score is absolutely perfect. Probably one of the best game scores out there. Definitely the best Zelda score in the series. I keep getting distracted by the music so often where I'll just doss around listening to the music.
Simply put the game is just a joy to play. The best 3D Zelda since OOT (however I'm giving Majora's Mask another chance so that opinion might change soon).
