Don't worry mrpopo, I fully understand what you mean. Some people are unwilling to admit that they prioritize their emotions, which is odd because it is a normal human response to tragedy. Over 150,000 people die daily with many millions more in a down trodden position in life. I feel little for these people as I don't know them or have any connection to them. Anyone who claims so is probably lying. If a parent, child, close friend or sibling died or hit rock bottom I would be extremely upset, but I can only offer fleeting sympathy to those unknown to me.

We're all on this rock together and we're all connected in some way. Your viewpoint is so strange and foreign to me. Our hearts have a boundless capacity for basic compassion. It's not like you need to ration it. It's not a limited resource.

Are we now? I disagree. Groups of people do not "have each others backs" and never will. You personally might, but those you support most likely don't have your back and will sell you out in a second. Different groups of people have different goals and they almost never overlap. This is basic human nature. I do not ally myself with people I have nothing in common with. I am interested in the preservation of myself, my family, my friends, my ethnicity, my state, and my country; in that order. And that will never change. I can already tell what insults will be thrown my way, but I would be hard pressed to find any group of people who think different (other than whites with a guilt complex).

I'm happy that people are waking up and realizing that things need to change but the fact that people aren't bothering to see the whole picture makes all these protests an exercise in futility.

While I applaud the 'Occupy' folks for trying to make a difference, that no one in the movement can coherently or intelligently explain what it is they want speaks volumes.

I understand this viewpoint completely. I had the same one for a long time. Recently I've tried to reconnect with my Christian upbringing and have made a point to try and feel for and help others around me that aren't in my personal circle. But I have to admit, sometimes I still find it hard to care for those I don't know.
