I have thought about this a bit more (and, again, I am probably biased because of what I just covered in my own blog on this topic)....but I think the NES had the most important (and thus arguably the best) launch.
While the VCS launch established a market for home consoles and took some time to really catch on, it was introduced at a time where people were getting more interested in gaming and so it seemed like good prospect...
By contrast, the NES launched when people were growing disinterested with games. The U.S. market had crashed just a few years earlier, and for Nintendo to launch the NES took tremendous cajones. Luckily for them, those cajones were held up by a launch lineup that included Super Mario Bros. amongst several other strong titles. The rest was history.
Other consoles may have had better launch lineups, but all of the "major" companies released their system to a fairly receptive market. Nintendo didn't have that luxury, and if they hadn't taken that gamble who knows when/if gaming would have been revived. The NES set the stage for the success of any and all future launches.
What Game System Had The Best Launch?

Best launch in my book is GBA. Super Dodgeball, Chuchu Rocket, Castlevania Circle of the Moon, and Super Mario Advance (remake of my favorite Super Mario Brothers), and Fzero. Just solid all around. Heck I think the GBA has the best catalog overall.
