It would be like someone bragging that they beat Battletoads when they used the warps. Doesn't count

Gamerforlife wrote:Tomb Raider may look and feel dated, but its classic puzzles are every bit as good now as they were then and I actually LIKED the original Tomb Raider's platform gameplay. It required precision, people who complained about missing all those jumps simply didn't have the skills to pull them off. You can't blame the gameplay, that's just the player having no skills. I find it funny when people bash older games for being unplayable and try to make the game's so-called outdated controls the scapegoat for their lack of skill.

I'm not too sure what Lara Croft's Bubsy-eque tank controls, the wonky camera perspective shifts that send you running in the wrong direction and the crippling load times have to do with someone's GAEMER SKILLZ. The camera angles more often than not were what killed Lara in most of my games, not missing jumps. Though I do fondly remember watching her crumple like a sack of doorknobs at the bottom of a long fall about a thousand times.

It's a bit amusing hear someone defending this era's games by invoking "you just go no skills", since this is generally seen as when you no longer had to be good at a game to finish it. You only had to be patient and persistent.

I suppose some people find these things endearing, like the flicker and slowdown in an NES game, but I still see them as design flaws. And flaws that keep someone (me, in this case) from enjoying the game are bad. And I played through Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II in the day, and I thought they were awesome, but I really don't have the patience for them now.

Wait, what? The Warp Zones aren't cheating.
Yes it is. The game was originally designed to be played in its entirety. So skipping levels is considered cheating.

So, an in-game shortcut that is easy to get to is the same as using the IDCLIP code?

I was just joking to stir up the pot. But how about completing versus mastering? If you 'completed' it by getting to the end it isn't the same as progressing all the way though without skipping half of it.

I was directing my post toward Weekend_Warrior.

That's pretty much my philosophy when it comes to "beating" games.

I feel the same way with the Resident Evil series. Nice wonderboy avatar by the way.

That's absolutely ridiculous. When they made games back then, they weren't trying to wow anybody with the graphics. It was all about making fun, simple games that people could easily pick up and enjoy.

Everybody knows the NES wasn't a graphical powerhouse. Sheesh! Get a clue

What's next - are you gonna bash the 2600 because it doesn't have an HDMI output?

When? In 1985 or 1995? Either way, they absolutely were trying to wow people with graphics. That's why NES games don't look like 5200 hundred games and why every arcade game doesn't look like Space War.

In 1985 it sure as hell was.

I don't think you're understanding at all what I'm trying to say. But thanks for replying!

Interesting that you're razzing me for being more interested in pretty graphics over good gameplay, when the PS1 would've been when most games were making giant leaps in graphics while stumbling backwards on being able to make good games with them.

WOW WOW WOW thats all i have to say. All I wanted to know was if it was worth keeping the ps1 and i guess it is after hearing what everybody is saying. Second I cant understand what ack and other people are saying about the grafics on this system. I was trying to play tomb raider two and its hard to try to play these games but with the small screen its not so bad, i just wont play the gamecube or wii and stick to snes and genesis games for a while and when i play the psone games its a refreshment from the 2d side scrollers and beat me ups. I'm also think its cool that weekend warrior and fifty dollar curse got into a heated argument with help from ack andgamerforlife and other people who wrote on this post lol. Well this is what im going to get and tell me if im not missing any other titles i should get. Mind everybody i'mn not going to dish out alot of money so here goes:

Some very good choices mas and good decision on checking out the PSone library. Back in the day I was a Nintendo fanboy but even I gave in to the awesome library of the PSone and picked up a Playstation around 1999. Some other titles you might check out:
Twisted Metal 1 and 2
Wipeout
Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver
Pocket Fighter
R-Types

Good luck!
