Is the game good? My son wants me to buy it for us to play. I have never played the Mario & Luigi games (although I do have one on the DS that I probably should have played by now).
I like Mario & Luigi: Brothership but it's gotten a mixed reaction. Reviews range from a 5 out of 10 from IGN (which has pissed off a LOT of people) to a 9 out of 10 from other reviews. I've seen this mixed reaction reflected in places like reddit and gamefaqs too.

For me, it's everything I like about M & L games. Fun combat that is based on timing and pattern recognition and the humor and charm that you'd expect from a Mario game. Plus, in this day and age I really enjoy getting a lighthearted game with bright and colorful graphics. This game is therapeutic. They've streamlined a few things, like you don't have to choose stat bonuses at every level up. Instead, you pick a rank up bonus every 8 or so levels, which can range from stat bonuses to other things (like damage bonuses for special attacks or reducing the cost of them). The game has a new graphical style compared to previous entries and it looks great. The game also has a seafaring vibe like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The water in this game is GORGEOUS. The boss fights are fantastic and some view the combat as the best in the series. There's a lot of options, particularly once you unlock battle plugs. They let you tailor combat to your play style, and a few of them are pretty broken. I also like that Luigi's intelligence is heavily emphasized in this game via a gameplay mechanic called Luigi's Logic. If you like Luigi, he really shines in this game.

Here are some of the things people have criticized it for, keep in mind not everybody playing the game is bothered by these things:

Luigi is AI controlled. You had some limited, manual control of him in previous games. Some people are really annoyed by this, I honestly don't care and don't see why it's a problem.

There are some performance issues, though some places (like IGN) have completely blown them out of proportion. I rarely found them to be an issue but IGN acts like the game is unplayable. My only problem has been during certain mini games where you have to hit something at the right time with a hammer. Sometimes you'll hit it at the right time, but a drop in frames will make the game miss your input. It's not a big deal, you can always try again.

Supposedly, the game goes overboard on tutorials, which I call BS on. The game will give you some text screens to explain new gameplay mechanics and then you're back in control, but people have been bringing up this complaint a lot.

The game is long, some people feel like it's too long and that the pace is sluggish. To me, it's an RPG, so game length isn't something I have a problem with.

Some people don't like the design of the NPCs. This one's subjective, I don't mind them at all. Some of them are very cute, particularly Connie.

Image

Lastly, some people think it's not as funny as previous games. I don't know, I like the humor. I enjoy some of the humor from talking to all the NPCs and interacting with signs and stuff, which I think a lot of players AREN'T doing.

This is the first M&L game from a new developer and after the series has been gone for several years. Some things are gonna feel different and I think that is causing the different reactions. Some people love this one (myself included) and some people don't.

EDIT: The game has a different composer too. I'm just bringing that up to further emphasize that some of the game's backlash is just because it was made by different people and some fans don't like that.

I see. Thanks for the explanation. I thought the polarising response I saw online was interesting. NintendoLife's review was the first one I saw and they gave it 9/10 and called it one of best in the series. Then I saw some less positive ones.

Having not played the games, some of the criticism it has received is stuff I wouldn't personally get I suppose.

I tend to find the longer franchises go on, the whingier and more difficult to please the fanbase gets. It's just one of those things. Everyone likes different things about the series and you tend to get a vocal crowd who are never happy, despite the fact that if you break it down they probably disagree with one another on what would make them better and which bits are bad.

I added Dynamite Cop for the Sega DreamCast this afternoon!

Dynamite Cop has been my most wanted DreamCast game for quite a while. I have never been able to find it at my convention, so I have been waiting for a bit. Finally, everything fell into place and I found a really nice copy out in the while. I remember playing Die Hard Arcade in the wild a few times, so to own a home copy of a game like that is very exciting. I'm running a little low on my DreamCast Wishlist, so I am very excited to get this big one checked off.

Nice pick-up, Markies! Love some Dynamite Cop. Looking back on it, it was probably one of the last great beat 'em ups released in that era. My cousins and I used to get a kick out of the various lines of dialogue randomly thrown out by the henchmen. Enjoy it!

Yeah, people are weird. Like I played Metal Slug Tactics recently. There is literally nothing special or interesting about that game whatsoever. It honestly doesn't even feel like Metal Slug. It's feels like a cheap, half assed, uninspired, mobile game. Yet, if you look online you see a lot of really great reviews for it. I would recommend someone go play something like Tactics Ogre Reborn or whatever the latest Fire Emblem game is before wasting time and money on something like Metal Slug Tactics.

Sometimes when I see people's reaction to a game it feels like they are talking about something entirely different from the game that I played. Brothership is a fun, solid game and I honestly think people who are giving it a 5 or 6 out of 10 are literally insane.

I'm learning more and more that sadly, it is impossible to know if I will like or not like a game until I play it myself. I just find I can't trust reviewers or youtubers anymore for opinions on video games. I can only trust myself. I miss the old days when you could go to a Blockbuster video and just rent a game for a weekend before deciding whether or not to drop 50-60 dollars on it. As a physical collector, sometimes I just take a chance on something and hope for the best. Or if I'm unsure, I may take a trip on the high seas before deciding whether or not to buy something.

Re: Games Acquired 2024

Post by Reprise »

Black Friday sales seem to start earlier and earlier every year and so I picked up some new Switch games and a new PS4 game that just happened to come out today.

I picked up Unicorn Overlord, because I have heard so many positive things about it and I enjoy Vanillaware games.

I also got Air Twister. I bought the PS5 version last year and really enjoyed it, so as the Switch version is cheap I thought why not? I want to support Yu Suzuki and ININ Games, especially after the recent Shenmue announcement.

Finally, Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection came out today (physically), so I got it for PS4. I would have got the Switch version but they did that code in a box bollocks here for some reason.
