I haven't participated in TR yet but the SGT '11 on the shmups forum was a blast! (pun intended) So I'm down!
I made my list based on games that I've been wanting to play.
A few have had multiple ports but I believe they could all be emulated easily enough...

Jan: Adventure - Metal Storm (NES)
Feb: Fighter - Time Killers (SEGA Genesis/MAME)
Mar: RPG - Shining Force II (SEGA Genesis)
Apr: Racing - Rock 'n' Roll Racing (SNES)
May: FPS - Wolfenstein 3D (Various)
Jun: Strategy - Dragon Force (SEGA Saturn)
Jul: Beatemup - Ghost Chaser Densei (SFC)
Aug: Party game - Bomberman Series (Various)
Sep: Platformer - Power Blade (NES)
Oct: Horror-related - Zombie Nation (NES)
Nov: Puzzle - Magical Drop Series (Various)
Dec: Shmup - Batsugun (SEGA Saturn)

January (Adventure): Golden Axe Warrior ✓
February (Fighter): (?)
March (RPG): (?)
April (Sports/Racer): Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 ✓
May (FPS): Wolfenstein 3D ✓
June (Strategy): (?)
July (Run-n-Gun/Beat-em-up): Guardian Heroes/Gunstar Heroes ✓
August (Party): Bomberman ✓ (If no one's taken to the Supercade idea, can we do multiple versions? Not like there's *that* much of a difference)
September (Platformer): Sparkster ✓
October (Horror): Maniac Mansion ✓ a Crush pinball game (?)
November (Puzzle): a Puyo puyo game (?)
December (Shmup): (?)

Current Thoughts:

RPG: Ys III had major releases for Genesis, SNES, TurboGrafx-CD, MSX2, and a later port to PS2. Ys I had no North American carts released.

Strategy: Yggdra Union is only five years old and is still available for the PSP, which does not make it retro. Likewise, Advance Wars is only 10 years old. Both Command and Conquer and Ogre Battle are retro, but clearly Ogre Battle is the better game. 8)

Shmup: I'm going back and keeping the R-Type hope alive by pushing R-Type III. Not only was it released for the SNES, but also later ported to the GBA and has a Virtual Console release. It's cheap and easy to find and still fun.

Hatta wrote:No WRPG? :( But if that's what the people demand, I guess that's ok with me. I'm actually halfway through Ys 1&2 on my Duo, so I'll probably participate.

But really, Y's 1&2 at least play a lot like a Zelda game. It's really more of an Action Adventure game, and I think we already picked Golden Axe Warrior. Maybe a Ys game would be a better fit for that slot, and we could still do a WRPG this year?
that's a good point, but in no way do I condone giving up Golden Axe Warrior. I'd much rather nix Ys and just find another RPG we can all agree on.

I agree if the old Y's are Zelda-ish, we should scrap them for something else. I'm with noise on wanting to push Golden Axe Warrior, it looks awesome and think a lot of us are set on that.

Fairly expensive on the SNES though. But that said there's always emulation, I've never played much of R-Type III so I could get behind this suggestion too.

yeah Golden Axe Warrior is seriously my one "I DON'T CARE GUYS, WE HAVE TO PLAY THIS ONE" pick.

R-Type III is good and all, but as DSH pointed out, we've already done more than one horizontal shmup, so it would be nice to do a vertical for those of us who are much better at those. (me)

I'd rather do Ys. It's hard enough finding a Golden Axe Warrior cart as it is. :?

Ys III is an action-RPG, which to me was the compromise between WRPG and JRPG. It's in between FFIV and Zelda, just like Secret of Mana.

I must have been confusing it with Super R-Type (under $5), although R-Type III is the better game.

How about Tiger Heli then?

There's 3 of them on ebay for $15-$30:

or as a cheaper alternative, it's re-released on 360 and PS3.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Two of which are in the UK, and I don't have either a 360 or a PS3. Plus being one of those "purist" types, I'd like to play it on the MS or PBC.
