Sony did have it nearly perfect. The original 80gb PS3's use software emulation only for playing PS2 games. Only the 60gb actually had PS2 hardware in it.

The 80gb ones still had the Graphics Synthesiser chip in them. The EE chip was taken out, but the b/c wasn't totally software.
