Ehh as soon as I get up out of bed, I'm playing Crystalis if I remember correctly(the NES version). So far it's a great rpg for a NES rpg >_>

Ack wrote:Since I had the day off yesterday, I figured I'd start tackling Brain Lord. I'm a ways into the game now, at the start of the Ice Palace.

This game is an interesting mix of sword-swinging action, platforming, and puzzle-solving. So far it hasn't been too difficult, but I'm wondering if there will be a truly mind-bending puzzle at some point in the game that I'll struggle with. That said, there have been a few tough ones that took a few minutes to think through for me. The platforming sections have been much more challenging, particularly in the Ancient Ruins segment with its disappearing(or invisible) floors. So far the combat hasn't been too challenging, and while impressively large, the bosses haven't posed much of a fight to me.

Either way, I look forward to making my way through the rest of this game and knocking off another one of the shorter SNES RPGs off my list.

Hey Bone, how long is Brandish? And what are some of the other short RPGs on the NTSC-U SNES, like Lagoon and Ys III?

I played that game last year. It's not bad actually. The math puzzles weren't the most difficult puzzles, although there was one that made me factor numbers for the first time in God knows how many years. Yikes. Good thing this game didn't use Calculus or I'd be shit out of luck (mostly because I've been spending the last 9 years trying to remove my memories of high school and college Calculus). Actually the most difficult puzzles were the ones involving the moving of rocks. Those were a severe pain in the ass, even with a walkthrough.

Ack wrote:So far, I like it. There are a couple of little things that bug me, such as navigating the inventory system, and I wish I could jump and attack, but I'm enjoying the frantic gameplay, experimenting with the different magic and Jade types, and exploring its massive dungeons. I also like that the different types of weapons get used in different types of ways. I prefer the swords and boomerangs, but I've also encountered bows, flails, and axes.

As I said earlier, there are some tough puzzles. And I don't know if this will affect you, but the game isn't kind to folks who are colorblind. But overall, I'd recommend playing it. It's been fun.

I wasn't a fan of the Jade system at first, but I ended up liking it a lot. My favorite was the one that shoots fireballs (duh). The dungeons weren't bad, but my complaint about them was that often times I had no idea where one floor ended and another began, because going from room to room on the same floor transitioned the exact same way as you did going from one floor to another, and many times I got lost because I thought I was going to another room and instead I was on another floor and I was like "the hell?", even with the map provided by....using x-ray glasses? Go figure.

Despite that, overall I did enjoy it. Music is highly underrated, lots of items to use, Jade system is rather cool, and uh.....puzzles? Ok.

Now if I can only find a better looking copy of Brain Lord to replace my copy that looks like it got the wrong end of a floor buffer on the front. Especially one with a manual and the weapons poster....

I'm about five hours into Legend of Legaia and it's pretty excellent so far - very underrated gem on the PS1.

You say underrated but I think I've heard so much about that game...at least in bits in pieces anyways...never really looked at it though

Golvellius on the Sega Master System.

Not a true RPG, I suppose... more of a Zelda-ish game.

Fun so far.

Well now i'm playing dragon warrior just to test the cart and I'm a little worried. To me it looked like some of the cart contacts were missing, and it seems like it doesn't sit right in my NES. It's fun since now where i'm standing is coming up correctly and it is interesting for the american version of Dragon Quest....but I'm wondering if I should contact the seller now that it finally came in because of this even if it does play...

DC or PS2? I was probably 10 hours into Grandia II a few years back when I was in grad school & had to stop due to lack of free time. I still own it... need to revisit it. Loved what I played. Interesting battle system.

Edit: just saw you said DC :D I really need to put this on my 2014 play list...

I really think the battle system is fantastic. I was never a fan of ATB in FF games, but the way timing is implemented here just feels great.

That first boss battle felt so awesome. I loved having Millenia in my party (because her special attacks were so powerful).

Did anyone else feel like Roan was maybe modeled w/ a nod towards Link?

Also, it was this really pleasant surprise to hear the voice of Leonardo in the game. :)

Whoa! Didn't realize Ryudo was Cam Clark.

Yeah, I recall that first boss battle. Good stuff. My 2014 playlist has 2 Saturn RPGs but no DC games... might need to dust off my Grandia II copy.

I really need to get grandia II. I've played a good chunk of the first one on my vita and I have to admit that is a great game. I still keep wishing it either gets re-released or I finally get a ps2. Probably going to get a ps2 before that happens...

Well I was playing crystalis on gbc. But just to test it out so I could leave some feedback for the seller. Pretty good game, and very different compared to the NES version. Both are great games, but wish nintendo would've just portablized the original, the original is what i think everyone was hoping for XD

Started the Stick of Truth last night, after playing some Reaper of Souls earlier in the week.
