I've actually heard of Yamipod, actually I think I tried once before but don't remember why I dropped it. I'm checking it out now... ugh, the official website has it as a bittorrent only dl. 3kb per second here we come!

There are some other open source programs that do this as well. I've never looked for them for PC, i know of a couple other mac programs.
Hearing more of the story makes me think of two things:
1) Your iPod is having software problems. You may need to have it completey wiped and have the newest software re-installed
2) For some reason it's not getting enough power from your usb connection. I've had this happen when using an older PC....but from your PC specs i'm pretty sure this isn't an issue.
