I am going through Awakening now. I’m on Chapter 1 and need to progress past Chapter 4 to get access to the store.

Next is Fates. This one I need to progress past Chapter 6. This is quite complicated. I have the “full version” with all three stories. However, if you have either one of the two games, you can buy the other story and the middle story as DLC (latter one being DLC only outside of the super expensive cart). I assume that down the line, the version with all three stories will cost an astronomical amount of money.

Last game was some remake. Echoes. I read that you need access to the map. Not sure of the chapter.

Sadly, the Special Edition, with all three stories, has always cost a lot of money, and it’s in the $200-$300 range right now. I am certain it will appreciate in light of the eShop’s closure.

I’ll remove the 3DS updates from the first post in this thread since, as AJ noted, you can just search “update” in the 3DS eShop to see all the physical games with free updates. You can’t do that in the WiiU eShop, though, and I’m developing a list of physical WiiU games that can be updated.

Also…and this is potentially a big one…there is free DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles X that, basically, preloads a lot of the game’s assets on your external storage. This download saves wear on your disc drive and improves loading times substantially. Accordingly, anyone with a physical copy of Xenoblade Chronicles X should get the free DLC if they plan on actually playing the game at some point. I’ll be sure to note this in the first post when I update it.

That’s unfortunate about the pricing but I’m not surprised. I got a cart only copy from GameStop in 2019 for $80. Basically the price for a new copy.

Games like the SMT series on the 3DS allows for DLC purchase from the outset. It sucks that the devs took this approach with the 3DS Fire Emblem games where you have to progress the story a bit to get access to the store.

What a drag!

Don’t mean to double post again but I wanted to provide a couple of games for the list. Specifically, for the two SMT IV games. Both have DLC. Extra story, maps, etc.

With these two games, you have access to the store from the onset.

Tonight I had a look through Wii U eshop games to see what I could find. I know a lot less here than on 3DS so I'm sure others could expand on this a lot:

Affordable Space Adventures
Chasing Aurora
Dr. Luigi
Fast Racing Neo (this did get a physical release in Europe though!)
Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water (physical release in Europe, but it's super rare and pricy. Got ported to newer consoles but digital only there too!
Flowerworks HD: Follies Adventure
Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge
NES Remix
NES Remix 2 (there were physical NES remix games but not all of the digital content is in them)
Pokémon Rumble U
Pullblox World
Scram Kitty & His Buddy On Rails
Spin The Bottle: Bumpy's Party
Swords & Soldiers 2
Typoman

Note that I didn't spend too much time checking for ports to other consoles, and I suspect some of these are available on PC.

Here's some DLC listings for Wii U as well:

Minecraft Wii U: Various skin and texture packs
Smash Bros for Wii U: 7x character and map packs, Mii costumes
Sonic Lost World: Free Yoshi's Story and Zelda themed zones
Xenoblade Chronicles X: free Data packs to improve load times and game performance
Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Expansion Pass (also available for Switch version)

The following DLC is available but is included in the Switch physical ports so I'd just recommend buying those instead:
Pikmin 3: Challenge packs
Mario Kart 8: 16 extra tracks + 3 extra characters
Hyrule Warriors: Character & Map packs, extra costumes

Sad to see that Nintendo is pulling the plug on the 3DS and WiiU eShop - easier than giving us the option to change themes for Nintendo Switch and transferring your purchased games to another platform!

Do have a retro game question for the oldie Game & Watch games, there are 2 ways to play, one is the GB/GBC Game & Watch gallery that spans across 3 collections, and the individual DSi Ware games. Which is the best way to play the original G & W games like DK Jr, Cement Factory?

If you want a slightly more 'authentic' version, got DSiWare. Otherwise, the Game & Watch Gallery games are better and more fun thanks to the 'modern' adapations which are just generally more fun.

Thank you for all the contributions! I have updated the first post with all of the suggestions, and some suggestions from articles I read on other sites.

I also checked all of my physical Wii U games for updates and posted a list of physical Wii U games with updates available. (Unlike the 3DS, you can’t just search for “update” in the Wii U eShop. You have to insert each game and start it to find updates.). I have a lot of Wii U games, but unlike Elkin, I don’t have them all. Accordingly, there may be a few more Wii U games out there with updates available. If you know if any, please post in this thread so I can add them to the list.

Thanks, everyone!

...this is super useful stuff, I know I definitely want to grab some of the TG-16 and GBA stuff before everything gets shutdown.

Is there any TG-16 stuff still available in the US on either platform?
