I've always prided myself on being able to make the best of older computer hardware. I keep a large archive of programs to get the best performance out of any system; I still keep up with the best DOS audio and video player apps, and I have experience with programs that provide a compatibility layer for Linux apps in a Windows environment.
My procedure is fairly simple to get the most performance from a system, and does not break any laws if you force a legal key into the slipstream (I have some here, too). I'd be happy to provide help doing a full OS install and program default replacements with freeware.
In particular, I know that laptop. I've done a full overhaul with Internet Explorer (windows interface) downgrade to 6.0 while keeping the latest SP3 upgrades active with tweaks to keep compatibility with new programs needs (until your GPU lacks) - less than 30 second boot time. Very snappy.
