thanks. Great suggestion marurun. Threw a post up yesterday with my dxdiag report and hoping for a reply soon. It just baffles me that I was able to get this running (albeit choppy) with significantly inferior hardware (dual core and 260x) and now with an upgradded quadcore and beefier GPU i get 0.00005 FPS and not even able to make it to start screen.

dunno, but it seems my best bet is to hope for an optimized patch/build to come out since performance issues with this title run deep.

Starting to think that maybe i'm not destined to play this title. After posts on bioware and reddit's forums, i still gets no love. Will poke around to see what tweaks I can make.

I suffered a catastrophic bout of malware this past weekend that really caused a great bit of damage. Although I managed to remove the majority, I decided to just reinstall windows, which I did. I 've spent the past few days setting up anti-virus and malware, drivers, etc., and have my rig back to basics. Anyway, it took a reinstall of W7 to get the game to finally run, and boy does it! I was very shocked to not only not get hung up on the initial loading screen, but then even more shocked to see a very fluid title screen with lines of soldiers marching (no lag or stutter), and then about messed my shorts when I was able to watch the intro, play the first few minutes with NO LAG, and then look at the settings to see it all running very well on Ultra settings. Thank you for infecting me malware. Without you, I would have never had the courage to wipe my system and start over. Many thanks

Me too. I would like to know too so that I don't find myself in the same circumstances going forward. Good advice on only installing what's needed and that's it. I've always tried to, but will be much more conscious of it going forward for sure.

It just keeps getting better and better! I loaded up some AC4 this weekend and was playing at fully maxed out settings and getting 64 FPS That's a HUGE increase from what I was previously getting. I would be fortunate to see 30 FPS. I could deal with it, but my experience is now much better with smooth framerates.

Basically a fresh install can do wonders I try to do it at least once or twice every year.

I used to do that with Windows XP, but from Vista forward the OS has been a LOT more tolerant of cruft and a lot better at keeping system impact of cruft to a minimum, thank goodness. My current system is only now starting to drag (in any new or unique ways) and it's been running the same Vista installation since summer 2009. I'm more worried about the physical state of the hard drive than I am the state of the OS installation.

So then, aside from installing programs that are only absolutely necessary, what are some other good housekeeping tips to keep the OS running minty fresh as a day 1 install?

P.S. I know they said that the 8gb 290x was a beast, but they were not kidding. I can max out every game and am getting consistent 60FPS. I cranked up AC4, Skyrim, Witcher 3, DAI and MGSV to the absolute max settings, and nothing but buttery smooth 60 FPS. I f I up the refresh rate on my monitor, I think I can get more, but mind=blown at this point. I seriously thought that 8Gb was overkill, but after watching the GPU settings as each game run and watching the RAM hit 5.5 GB's in some places, I'm sure glad I sprang for an 8GB card. God I love my GPU right now.... Now if only I could find the time to game with it...

I use Glary Utilities for house keeping. Specifically it's Regestry Cleaner, Disc Defrag, Clean Up tool, and Start Up Manager to kill unneeded programs and processors from starting until needed. Use Revo Uninstaller to remove unwanted programs as it has a fantastic cleaner to reduce program remnants. And lastly AVG Free for anti-virus-ing needs.

I ran into a similar issue awhile back where my PC, upon startup, became slow or even unresponsive completely for short periods. Games took a hit every so often as well. It was during the first 10 minutes of operation.

Long story short, it was a set of programs that slowed everything down: Gadwin Print Screen, CoreTemp, and programs associated with my gaming mouse and keyboard (the mouse and keyboard I got rid of along with the programs). I stopped them both (or uninstalled the M&K programs) from starting at startup and everything is much faster from boot up to shutdown and everything in between.
