It's not any different from other ethnicities: all people of European origin are lumped together as one, as are all people of African or Asian origin. The same thing applies to all of them (historically speaking they haven't considered themselves to be part of the same race). So the "Native American" ethnic label consists of all the different tribes. The "multiracial" label is for people who belong to two or more ethnic groups simultaneouslysamsonlonghair wrote: What if I told you that Indians did not historically consider themselves to be one race of people? The Seminoles are a people; the Iroquois are a people; the Sioux are a people; The Cherokee are a people. These tribes are separate nations just as France, Italy, and Germany are separate nations.

Redskins is an offensive name. If the NFL allows it then they would be putting up with racism.Jmustang1968 wrote:Dude you have no idea of what you are talking about. Re: Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?
My great aunt is very anti-government (and indian). When Congress asked the Redskins to change their name, she had a helluva lot to say about it. I specifically remember it because of her ranting.AppleQueso wrote:
Yes they did. Multiple times.
And ironically enough, my family is very pro-Redskins because of a possible family member being a past running back: John Riggins (I'm not sure how connected he is to our family or not, I think it's just assuming since the name isn't too common). My dad's side of the family, the family I'm speaking of, are Native Americans (Wintu tribe), I'm part of it. I'd imagine if anyone should be offended by the name, you'd think we would. And we're not.
I completely feel the entire thing is just a bunch of people that love to stir up controversy and are drama addicts, when in reality it's just a silly little mascot.

I don't see what any of that has to do with the fact that yes, Native American groups themselves have asked the Redskins to change their name. Just because your family wasn't a part of it, doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

The problem is, small vocal groups don't speak for native americans as a whole.AppleQueso wrote:I don't see what any of that has to do with the fact that yes, Native American groups themselves have asked the Redskins to change their name. i just don't have the energy today
also, BurningDoom, Congress never asked that. Some select members have, but it wasn't a government action or a vote or anything.
And if the name causes personal offense to some and has demonstrable racist origins and connotations, I can't see any good arguments from anyone else to the contrary for keeping it. What value is there in keeping such a name that at least some groups have repeatedly stated is derogatory? Just because other native americans don't care or like the name, that somehow makes it no longer derogatory to the group who asked for the change?

Re: Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?
I voted yes to both as although there are teams from all sports named after indigenous peoples, few actually make direct reference to skin tone. It seems a bit off for 2013.
Would a new franchise choose to call themselves something that is a racial slur? Doubt it.
American sports seem to have no qualms about moving an entire team to a different part of the country so I don't get the tradition argument either.
