What's your favorite Doom clone?
Re: What's your favorite Doom clone?
I enjoyed Rise of the Triad, Heretic, and Duke Nukem 3D a lot back in the day. However my favorite FPS of the 90's had to be Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and its expansion pack Mysteries of the Sith. I played the heck out of those games and it was my introduction to online multiplayer and mods.

Star Wars: Dark Forces and Duke Nukem 3D. Did anybody ever try the "Duke it out in D.C." expansion pack?

Essentially, yes its the same game. I think it has some new exclusive levels and one or two levels missing, but basically its the original DOOM

Actually DOOM64 is an odd bird. The sprites have been considerably redone, levels are darker and feature fog, there is a new weapon exclusive to the game, and the reliance on satanic imagery is enhanced.over other versions, making for a different overall experience. It's DOOM, but it is not the same.

^I think the first level may be similar, but I know for sure it is a different game. Very different. In fact, it is a game a DOOM fan MUST have, as far as I am concerned.

Level maps are unique in Doom 64 as well. Not even the first level is the same. (I've actually been playing it lately, so good timing).
Its quite different from previous Dooms. Its also really awesome, so any Doom fan who hasn't played it really should. I've met people who don't like it because its too different, but I think those people are party poopers.
Story wise, its considered a direct sequel to Doom 2.
There have been fan made conversions of the game to PC, for anybody who's interested in playing it with a mouse. Doom64Ex is pretty slick and easy to get running.

Doom Absolution was another total conversion, that's the one I played. Excellent stuff.
The game is hands down amazing. Nice to see it get some love around here. It's very different than the first two games, but at the same time, way more "Doom 3" than Doom 3 itself (I'm also a Doom 3 fan, but it's obviously a different experience). Doom 64 was brutal too, as hard as some megawads out there probably... it literally felt like the Hell Knights were the most common enemy type in the second half. It got so ridiculous it was a little laggy in the later levels when I played it on my laptop.
I just wish it had more space levels before it goes to Hell. I think there was only ~8 space levels out of 30 something. The atmosphere and level design for those stages was very awesome.

Doesn't this mean its a better version of the game?

It means it's a different game entirely. Think of it as a sequel.

I'm still voting for Chex Quest. Best game I ever received in a cereal box. Some parts of that game were genuinely unnerving when I was a kid. I should still have it somewhere. I may install DOSbox for the very first time just in the hopes of running Chex Quest......
